WHDLOAD and expanded memory

Hello experts, sorry for the double threads!

A friend of mine asked met the next question and I wonder if you can help him:

I am looking for expanded memory (min. 2MB) to use with WHDLOAD. Is there anybody out there who has one for sale? Or knows somebody (adress, company, country) who is able to supply this?

The important thing is what hardware your friend has. If he has an A1200 for example, then he might do better trying to get an 030 accelerator for it, and adding some memory to that. That would give him a very useful machine, and very good for WHDLoad. The 040 is not nearly as compatible as the 030.

He could do a lot worse than keeping an eye out on Ebay for this kind of thing, or if he wants to buy new probably amigakit.com.

I'm sure that you didn't need to start two identical threads, but the most relevant piece of information that you haven't provided is the type of machine for which your friend requires the extra memory; without this information, an answer is impossible.

but that is history now

He has a amiga 1200, I think the standard version.
He has a HD, otherwise he would not ask voor WHDLOAD info.

A 2Mbyte PCMCIA SRAM is the cheapest solution at about €20 to €40

A 4Mbyte Trap door RAM exapansion is better, but will cost more.

030 accelerator is NOT required but would make Workbench faster.

Make sure that you dont get bigger than 4Mbyte or make sure they are PCMCIA friendly to avoid conflicts.

If going for an accelerator, go for the safe bet, a Blizzard 1230.

I'd recommend against using PCMCIA SRAM as Ram expansion on an A1200.

It slows the whole machine down because it has a less wide bus.

How does an accelator 1230 use the memory ?
I have an exp.board Phase IV with 64 MB , but that's limited with the use with a prog like Octamed V.
Does WHDLOAD acces only accelators with max. 8mm o.s.l.t. or is 64 mb no problem for the use of it?

The phase5 Blizzard 1230 IV accelerator has one 72pin sim slot that can take 72pin simms upto 128Mb in size.

It can also have a SCSI expansion card fitted, that also has a 72pin simm slot, that can take simms upto 128Mb in size.

so in total, 256Mb of ram can be added to the Blizzard 1230 IV

WHDLoad doesn't have any problems running with this much ram. infact, the more the better, as you can then tell WHDLoad to precache all the game data into memory, making WHDLoad games run much faster with regard to loading times.

try not to use PCMCIA memory cards unless you have to, as they are on a 16Bit bus, not a 32bit bus - so much slower than ram on an accelerator card.

question. how do you mean that the ram on your accelerator card is limited to octamed pro?

And if you are partial to 3D games, flight-sims etc, quite often the patcher will manage to let the game use fast memory and caches, so that the game runs more smoothly than it ever did on the original hardware. Which means that some of those games that crawled on an A500, suddenly come into their own over a decade later. Its almost like a new game has been released - or liberated.

That and stuff like Frontier and Elite simply flies when you give it a 68030 at 50MHz to play with :-)
