New Xsurf2 not working?
« on: May 04, 2003, 10:52:32 AM »
I bought an X-Surf2 and i took it from the customs in Turkey 2 days ago.

I plugged the card in one of my A4000T`s two remaining Z3 slots and istalled the software.

i started xsurf test program and it gives and error about some 16 bit memory. If something`s wrong with the card a friend would be able to fix it. What could be the problem?

when i choose x-surf.device as ethernet device in miami or miamidx and click query device, mouse freezes for 5 secs and tells cant open x-surf.device,0

This is xsurftest result

6.Ram Disk:> xsurftest
xsurf testprg V1.2 (13.12.1999)

Searching for xsurf card (VEN_ID=4626, PROD_ID=23)....found
Board address = 0xe90000

ISA Plug and Pray [ähm] Play setup...
No PnP card found!

Searching for RTL8019 at 0x300...found!
Testing 16bit memory...PIOWriteMem Timeout!
false!

No need to buy a hub to connect it to the PC
Just use a crossover cable, and enable ICS in windows.

Pfff

The card is faulty im not sending it back to Germany as it would cost too much.

How will I fix it? Is the only problem with its onboard cache?

xsurftest program should have an output like this: according to http://batman.jypoly.fi/~saku/lehti/online/33/osastot/testit/x-surf.html

xsurf testprg V1.2 (13.12.1999)
Searching for xsurf card (VEN_ID=4626, PROD_ID=23)....found
Board address = 0xe90000
ISA Plug and Pray [ähm] Play setup...
01-CARD VendorID = 0x19808c4a SerNr=0x19b733 CRC==x52
Setup PNP card...
Searching for RTL8019 at 0x300...found!
Testing 16bit memory...ok!
Ethernet address = 52:54:40:25:89:e4
Chip is in PnP mode
Chip is using half-duplex mode
Chip is using IOBase something (0x3) and IRQ 2/9

; From you original post we see this:

These imply that the Amiga sees the X-surf card, but not its on-board ISA card.  If you examine the X-surf, you’ll notice that its really two cards combined.  The Network Interface Card (NIC) is a standard model available for PCs, while the rest includes a pseudo ISA slot, which is connected to the NIC.  The connection is covered with two strips of plastic, one on either side.  It may be that this connection is faulty.  A bit of solder may do the trick, but be careful.  Alternately, the NIC itself may have troubles.  This bit--

[emphasis added] –suggests that the Amiga is writing to the NIC’s memory, but that not all of the data that is read back matches what was written.  Since most of the data is read back correctly, the connection between the cards is probably okay.  New cards of that sort should be cheap enough, and if the memory is in a socket, it should be easy to replace.

I'm pretty sure the memory would be internal to the Realtek chip (the one with the crab on it, which is the ethernet controller itself), which would require some serious SMT equipment to desolder and transplant.

That 'off by one' problem is interesting... wish I knew what it could mean.  Anyone bothered to contact Individual Computers for a rough diagnosis, at least?

(Random speculation: A single bad connection, somewhere?  Other device on the Zorro bus interfering during every few cycles of something?  **Buggy Buster/Bridgette interaction?**)

Looks like the error only occurs on Bit 0. So this means that probably the D0 or D8 line not quite stable or protected (you could try and trace the circuit and see if there's something visibly wrong with the signal line). Did you try different zorro slots? If this helps, cleaning the contact may do good to the 'faulty' one.

However, the PIOWriteMem Timeout indicates that there's a problem with the bus timing.

I'm sure Jens Schönfeld will be glad to help fix this.
