Thursday night specials..
« on: June 15, 2006, 11:19:50 PM »
I am a lucky ebayer (I hope)

Looky what I just bought:

BPPC scsi 240/040
PCMCIA adapter

Hope they turn up - the seller has good feedback. 8-)

Hope it takes G-rex, but not that fussed.  The scsi alone is worth the price.  Think I'll leave it a while before upgrading it to an 060.....  :-)
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

That does seem to be a good price. Couldn't go back to an 040 though, not after using an 060 :-)

It's not that much of a stepback when the PPC CPU is there. At least now he can play Quake 2, and have a go with MorphOS :-)

Yep, and the PPC datatypes helps alot too
Quite pleased with my '040 BlizzPPC here, it's slower than a '060 but you can live with it..it's all a matter of tweaking to get the best performance  ;-)

Exactly. For some wierd reason I have started using my A1200T 040/160 quite a bit, while my A4000 060/233 just stands doing nothing :-(

Send it to me :-)

Personally, I find an 040 a bit too slow. But then, I am running a 1024x768x32 Mediator screenmode with a truecolour backdrop, PowerIcons, VisualPrefs etc etc :-) There was a noticable increase in performance when I upgraded to an 060, and everything feels smooth now where it was sluggish before.

@motorollin

Yeah, 040 would be slow, but as AMIGAZ pointed out, there are PPC datatypes. These run about 3 times as fast as the 040 datatypes, and since the datatypes takes care of the PowerIcons and your truecolor backdrop, you won't loose anything at all.

Even the Warp3D ppc demo on the lowest spec PPC, regardless of which 68k will kick the 060 demos ass.

@doctorq

I think that Powericons don't use datatypes.

In order to check it you can move your png datatype from devs to storage.

I mostly agree with Motorollin... using a 040 after being used to 060's speed hurts

I never said it didn't, but using a 040 with PPC CPU is faster than using a 040 only based board, and the PPC executes tasks much faster than the 060, for instance with datatypes.
