Doom And Quake ports for 060

Hi guys,
i was wondering, what 68k Quake ports are available for 060 and AGA? Which one is the fastest and most stable one?
Also will voodoo3 on mediator makesignificant difference in speed over AGA? Have an axtra new A1200 in box i might start building, might go tower case+medator route.
Also s there a special 060 version of Doom executable or just generic 68k port?

I've seen ADoom mentioned here on Aorg quite often.
Dunno about Quake though.

VERY. There is a special version of Quake called BlitzQuake, which runs very smoothly on 060/Mediator.

As for DOOM, the mentioned ADOOM is a good port, but as with Quake, graphics card will make it more playable.

Interesting, I haven't heard of this one. I've already completed Quake on my Mac, but I think I'll give this a try "because it's there" :-)

All of the Amiga DooM ports I have found are lo-res versions (like the original). I want to see an Amiga port of one of the hi-res neo-DooMs (like DooM Legacy)

ADoom allows Amiga Hi-res (640x480 ntsc) iirc.
posted on A2500+ C=2620 14MHz/8MbFast/1MbChip

Any resolution i try, i get ADoom screen only on upper left corner. But i remember on my previous A1200 it run fullscreen without any problem (320x240, or was it 320x256).

If I don't remember wrong, DoomAttack is quite much faster than ADoom and also allows you to run it in any given resolution. Though running it in higher resolution than 320x200 will most likely be too taxing for any 68k Amiga.

I'd have to disagree with the statement that you can get Quake to run fluently on a 060.

I'd go as far as saying: you CAN play it if you can live with , what I see as, extremely low framerate (or extremely low resolution). But, I still have not played a version on 060 (AGA and RTG accounted for) that runs fluently enough for me to bother about playing.

Some could say something like "you can't compare the Amiga version of Quake with running the game on a PC". I beg to differ. The game was MEANT to be played on PC with a decent resolution and decent FPS. So, what you get when playing Quake on the 060 is a port for the Amiga running NOTHING like the game originally was intended to be run. But then again, if someone finds pleasure in playing the game like it can be played on a 060 Amiga, well, I'm glad for them.

Concerning using Warp3D to run Quake instead of the regular 3D-rendering, that will in theory not make much of a difference because Quake's engine doesn't support that kind of 3D. Rather than leaving the graphic card to handle the 3D , and freeing up some CPU (which would be the case with Quake 2) you're just adding some bits and pieces for the CPU to handle. Exactly how this work I have no way of describing since it now was ages since I got it explained to me (and I'm not that technical when it comes to things like this), but someone with good knowledge on Quake's engine can certainly explain it all. Maybe it differs betweens some of the ports, I don't know, but in whatever case, using Warp3D to run Quake will give probably in most of the cases give a much less satisfying result than running Quake II on Warp3D.

Ah yes.....
DoomLegacy is a thing of beauty, I've run it on my 'slow mac' (800Mhz eMac) and it ran perfectly. On my fast Mac (DP G5) it playes just as good, just faster.

It would be great to do that on an Amiga. IIRC< it's the standard DOOM wad file run through a modified Quake 1 engine. A feat of programing!

Anyone want to port that for PPC Amiga????

ADoom works perfectly with any resolution, even 1024X768 or higher!  You have to specify a screen resolution in the tool types and then when you pick the higher res screenmode it will be full screen!  If you have it set to the default 320X200 (with no tool type set) and you simply pick 640X400 it will not work!  You have to specify I believe the command is HEIGHT=400 and WIDTH=640 for it to work.  On my 060/66MHz based setup with CyberGraphx 64 I can get 640X480 running very well (around ~12 fps)

I NEVER played quake on my 060/60 + voodoo3 or PPC+voodoo3 and enjoyed it... it simply sucks on the amiga... one would expect that the ppc version would be OK, but no, still choppy...

doom runs 100% speed on 060+aga though...

When running the software rendering QuakeWOS on my A4000 with a CSPPC+CVPPC in 320x200, it is just like playing it on a faster Pentium machine from the Quake heydays - ~40+ fps average. If it is framerate you are after, this is the fastest WarpOS port of Quake.

I quite enjoyed playing Quake on my old CSPPC/CVPPC powered A4000.. even managed to win some freebie stuff at one of the UK shows by trouncing everyone in the Quake multiplayer competition
