MakeCD 3.2 problem
« on: June 06, 2006, 02:51:49 PM »
I have burn many cds, with various 030 Amigas to the past, with the makeCD 3.2 without problems. Last year I try to backup my HD to cds but the buffer (about 10MB) run quickly to empty. The result is not correctly writen cds. I upgrade to 040 from 030 but with same results! I try with image file and without image, with DAO or TAO but nothing. I use an idefix buffered adapter with a master 2.5 HD (8GB) and a master 3.5 combo DVD/CDRW BTC. Ofcourse I have install the idefix 97' software to support it. The crazy thing is that I have burn many cds with other amigas (A500 020/33mhz!!! & A1200T 030/50mhz) to the past without problems. Ideas? :-?

There's an option in MakeCD to disable concurrent reads and writes. This could help in this case.

You could try reducing the write speed in the MakeCD options.

Iirc
0 = automatic or maximum (I forget)
1 = 1x speed
2 = 2x speed
3 = 4x speed

etc.

Should all be in the docs..

Also, make sure your CD burner is set up corectly in IDEfix prefs to use maximum speed (0).  Not sure if this makes a difference when MakeCD takes over, but can't hurt to try.

Even 6x to 8x is still less than 2MB/s - should be no problem to read from scsi or RAM to CD writer on the IDE bus.  If you're trying to write an image from a hard drive on the IDE bus this could be a major problem though.

If the image file is small enough, and you have enough RAM, try moving the image file to your RAM disk and writing to disk from there.  Otherwise you'll have to find a way of forcing MakeCD to write at a lower speed.  I'm sure there must be a setting somewhere which allows this?

Is the hard drive containing your image file on the same IDE cable as your CD writer?  I'm not sure whether it might be better to have them on seperate IDE lines, or whether it would make little difference.

in a3000 with the standard scsi controler, when i'm setting the speed at 1x writes at 1x. in a1200 dosn't work. i have try to write both image files and direct files from a partition (i.e. System). when i'm writing files from the partition the burn process is faster. in any case, i only have the standard ide port of the a1200.

Try what I told you. It might be that the IDE bus is blocked while a write command is active, so no data can be read from the partition. This is even more probable with the drives being on different channels of the IDEfix adapter, because the read and write commands have to be finished before the IDEfix software can switch to the other channel. You should try to connect both devices as master and slave to the same channel.

The IDEfix adapter is not the same as the two disjunctive IDE controllers on a PC motherboard. The IDEfix only allows one IDE controller to be switched between two cables. But you can access only one cable at a time. If you read the manual of the IDEfix adapter, you'll see that you should first fill the first channel with a master and a slave before you use the second channel to connect a third and fourth device.

Bye,
Thomas

To my case the first channel is for my 2.5 HD. I can't connect 2 HDs on it, the cable is short and have only 1 connector. The second channel have the 3.5 DVD/CDRW as master too.

When burning with image, does it make the image successfully first or will it stop there? Does the buffer underrun happen at same place always? Have you tried to write some other data? Is your HD badly fragmented? It could affect with that low spec system. Your CDRW doesn't have buffer underrun protection?

It create image to HD successfully. And the buffer goes to empty ever with same steps in a few secs. The rest you have wrote is not happened to my system.

AFAIK the IDEfix adapter has one 2.5" connector and two 3.5" connectors. The 2.5" connector and the first 3.5" connector are shortened, so you can have the master on the 2.5" cable and the slave on the first 3.5" cable. So you should try to connect your CD writer to the other 3.5" connector and change the jumper to slave. It should then be scsi.device unit 1 (if idefix software is running) or atapi.device unit 1 (in any case) instead of unit 2 as before.

And there is still the "no concurrent reads and writes" option in MakeCD waiting to be tested.

Bye,
Thomas

I have tied the other port of adapter but don't worked at any combination (master or slave or CS). So, I have returned to other port and device unit 2.

What do you mean: "And there is still the "no concurrent reads and writes" option in MakeCD waiting to be tested." I hear for it first time.

"no concurrent reads and writes"

He means in the preferences, Hardware Compatibility Settings, Parallel read/write.

If this is off, try with it on.
