Wipeout2097, what's the secret of getting it to work 100%?
« on: June 06, 2006, 02:25:03 PM »
For the first time in my life I've been able to play Wipeout2097 on one of my Amiga's but it only runs in Window mode.
The option to run it hardware accelerated is shadowed.
My config:

A1200
Blizzard PPC + BVision
OS3.9 BB2
Latest WarpUp and Warp3D

Does anyone know the trick to be able to use hardware acceleration and play in full screen?

Amiga 4000 - CS MKIII
Amiga 1200 - Blizzard 1230 MKIV
Amiga 1200 - Stock
Amiga CD32 - TF360
A bunch of ol' A500's

Wipeout 2097 works fine here on A4000/CSPPC/Mediator in full screen, as well as on A1200/BPPC/BVision, so must be a configuration problem.

Have you set up correct screenmodes? Wipeout needs a 15 bit screen in order to run in full screen mode.

I recommend you play that game on a pc cause better graphics and speed, also the nintendo 64 version of that game is better than the amiga and you can play it as well using the emulator Project 64

On my CSPPC+CVPPC, for "Graphics Mode" I can select "Window", "Double Buffered Screen" and "Triple Buffered Screen". Disregarding which one of those I choose, the "Warp3D Driver" selection is grayed out, saying "Hardware" as in using a hardware accelerated Warp3D driver.

I only think you can select something else there if there also is say a software rendering driver for Warp3D in your system, so there actually would be another option except "Hardware".

Doesn't it work at all in other modes than Window?

Regarding DoctorQ's post - for 15-bit modes to appear, you have uncheck the "HIDE15BIT" box in the Prefs/CyberGraphX program. A reboot after that is most likely required.

I recommend instead don't play that game at all cause is a buggy and bored and bad designed game
don't lost your time and
don't play it on amiga or any other platform

I reinstalled Warp3D and what do you know..it worked
Just played in 640x480 15bit but I can't say it went smooth but a BVision and a poor '040@25mhz used for AHI isn't the fastest combination

I always use Paula instead of AHI because it is much faster.

@AMIGAZ:

Yeah, 640x480 is imho to slow even with a CSPPC060/50+604e/200MHz and a CVision. At 512x384 the game starts getting really playable speedwise. The only bad thing is that the menu textures are made for 640x480 and wont look very good at lower resolutions. The game itself looks fine though.

Btw, 16-bit might actually be faster than 15-bit and it is better not to use AHI as it can only make it slower.

Thanks for the tips guys ;)
Will play without AHI next time and try 16bit mode.

Wish I could get it running on my A4000 Mediator machine.
The game doesn't work in Window mode there, just says that the Warp3D mode isn't supported and the game hangs just after the Psygnosis screen has been shown

Is this really true? I did own the PC version back in the days (or if it was a friend that owned it, can't remember) and I can't seem to recall it being anything but awful, graphicswise. It didn't have support for 3D acceleration (other than software rendering) and only played in 320*200.

Where there different versions of the game?
Amiga 1200, Mirage Tower, PC-Key 1200, Blizzard 1260/50, SCSI Kit, 256MB RAM, 40GB HD, Mediator SX, Soundblaster 128, Voodoo 3 and Realtek 8139.

@AMIGAZ

There is a Picasso96 env that needs to be edited to the opposite in order to get it into full screen mode on Mediator machines. Can't remember what it's called though, haven't got my A4000/Mediator up and running at the moment.

-EDIT-

Found out, it's called ShowModes. Set it to all, and you can play the game in full screen.

That is wrong in so many ways.

For starters there is no N64 port of wipE'out"2097, the only formats it came out on were the original Playstation, the Saturn and the PC initially, then years later an Amiga port was made (and a Mac one at some point).

wipE'out"64 is another game in the franchise that dramatically reduced the graphics well below what they looked like on the Playstation version (the N64 can't handle much in the way of poly count or texture size), fudged together some new tracks out of re-arrangements of the original wipE'out" and 2097 tracks and had a crummy sounding soundtrack because of the cartridge format. So it is significantly worse in appearance and sound than any version of 2097.

The PC port was the worst 2097 port as it had many graphical problems and bugs, and won't work under 2k/XP without hackish modifications. The Amiga version running on a decent rig like one of the clones (A1 or Pegasos) should be much better than the PC version.

Of course if you want the full soundtrack only the PS version had that because of licensing restrictions, though CoLD SToRAGE provided a very good replacement soundtrack (aka Tim Wright, composer of SOTB parts II and III along with Lemmings and various other Amiga games).

Wierd, it works here with me. Have you tried starting it without intro? IIRC it have problems with displaying the intro.
