Quick tour of Paris !
« on: June 03, 2006, 09:24:31 AM »
French filmmaker Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had it driven through the heart of Paris.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit.

The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 MPH in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up real one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested.

Well, apart from being completely irresponsible, putting his life and the lives of countless others at risk, you can say one thing - he's a 'good' driver, and he certainly knows those streets well!

Its scarily like watching someone play Grand Theft Auto

cheers for the link

Hmmm, now wasn't Bernie trying to get a GP around the streets of London, Paris and Vegas?

Wonder when the other tours are being filmed ;-)

I have this film on DVD, best £14.99 I spent in a long time.

The most interesting question posed by the film is "who was driving the Ferrari?".  Unless he was gifted with the reflexes of an F1 driver, it wasn't Lelouch himself - indeed he argued this at the subsequent trial when he refused to name the driver.  Certainly upon viewing the film, it's obvious that whoever is driving the car either knows exactly what they're doing to millimetre perfection, or is certifiably mad.

Rumours persist that Lelouch actually hired an F1 driver for the film, although the identity of the driver remains a mystery.  Could it have been a French national like Arnoux or Jabouille?  Could have even been Villeneuve?

Had to have been a professional race driver, he never missed a gear as he upshifts and downshifts, while braking and cornering, and he spent lots of time planning the route.

Lelouch admitted many years later in an interview (link)that he was the driver..and also that he was driving a Mercedes, but the audio was a Ferrari.

There has been speculation that the soundtrack was dubbed, kind of takes away some of the mystery though to hear that Lelouch has confirmed this.  The scene where the car goes through the short tunnel with all twelve cylinders screaming away makes the hairs on my neck stand on end.

However, anyone notice the total absence of body roll when the car is cornering?  Either the camera is extremely well stabilised or the car it's attached to has very, very stiff suspension.
