Please help my poor 1200 from certain death...

Hello everyone!

I have quite a task at hand and need something that will not take me 18 years to complete. You seem like a smart bunch so I figured I'd ask here.

Here's my problem:

I am a musician and have been using an amiga 1200 for all of my musical needs for the last 10 years. Well I just found out two days ago that the external dataflyer hard drive that I usually backup to failed on me. This isn't a total loss because everytime I did a backup it usually took a couple of hours to complete...I have nearly 100,000-150,000 sound/mod files(!!). No joke.

I also have 2 amiga 600 systems as well as a spare 1200 that have fresh/clean hard drives.

Here's my question:

How do I go about copying all of my work from my main 1200 to the other three amiga systems? Do I need to do this by floppy for every single file? What is the easiest solution here?

Since both computers have PCMCIA ports, this might be the quickest route. Then you can even copy everything to your PC and make a backup CD.

Otherwise you can make a ParNet/ProNet connection between the 2 Amigas. There should be something on Aminet that should explain how to do it.

Since both computers have internal 2.5" IDE controller why not plug in you're "original A1200 HDD" as a slave to the other systems using an 2.5" IDE calbe supporting 2 drives and just copy the stuff?

Welcome to Amiga.org!

A PCMCIA Compact Flash Kit will be the quickest solution.

The kit is supplied with a boot floppy disk which does not necesarily need a hard drive and allows you to copy from one Amiga with PCMCIA to another.

If its just the Harddrive that has failed why not just replace the drive in the external unit.

DataFlyer 1000 SCSI:
AMD 5380 SCSI controller
50 pin internal SCSI header
optional external DB25 connector
DataFlyer 1000 IDE:
40 pin internal IDE header
hard disk activity LED on front of the case

What drive type is in your unit (IDE/SCSI) suspect once the drive has been replaced you should be able to prep with the setup software as before.But you need to confirm that it is the drive and not the Data flyer controller that is faulty.

Hello Amigan24, I can't help you with the Amiga trouble as I am just starting out with 1200s myself. Wish I could though...

I have a question regarding music and the Amiga. I am a musician too and would very much like to know what peripherals you use with your machine in order to meet your music-composing needs. I'd like to use my Amiga (when it's up and running) for this purpose as well.

Plugging the 1200 drive into the other Amiga is the best idea. If for some reason that can't be done, you might have a look at PARNET on Aminet. It allows file sharing between Amigas through their parallel ports. The only down side is you will have to have a Parnet cable. You can make one if you have the tools. Way back, places like softhut.com used to sell them. All the info you need is in the Parnet documentation. Good luck saving all your music. Years ago I got a used parallel ZipDrive and saved all my samples that way.

Have you thought about getting a CD writer?

The most painless way to do this would probably be using a Squirrel PCMCIA-scsi adapter with a SCSI cd-writer, as this would mean you could unplug this and plug it into all your amigas easily.

By writing to CD you can also store them on your PC easily, or upload them to a web storage area (ie keep them safe against future hardware problems).

This would also mean should you decide to use WINUAE there would be no problems in transferring your files to your PC.

The hardware would also allow you to easily install OS3.9 (should you so desire).

I'd recommend getting Abackup also if you've not already - crunching your mass of mod files into a single archive not only reduces the quantity of bytes to transfer, but reducing down to a single file will knock a lot of time off your file transfer operations when backing up your mods.
