Voodoo5 5500 PCI for SALE?
« on: May 05, 2006, 05:01:06 PM »
Does anyone have a voodoo5 pci card for sale?  Or, that they would be willing to sell.

I am looking to buy a mediator, but wanna line up one of these cards first.

Thanks!

Better get a Voodoo3 instead. The Voodoo5 drivers for the Mediator do not give you any real benefits over the Voodoo3.

OTOH, the Voodoo3 is cheaper, available, completely silent and does not get as hot as the V5.

are there any other drawbacks having a voodoo 5 than those you mentioned. Like slower screen updates due to the bad drivers etc?

Really?

Elbox told me they thought the voodoo5 was the best bet and that I should try to get one of those rather than settle on a voodoo3.... wierd

No I don't think so - but it doesn't give any real benefits either (except maybe for the "great" feeling to have a V5 instead of V3). The V5-driver only uses one of the two GPU's - equivalent to a V3-compatibility mode. Further to this, the V5 is not officially supported by Hyperion.

I switched from Voodoo 5500 to Voodoo 3000 about 2 months ago and the Voodoo 3000 feels faster and games like Earth 2140 and Nightlong doesn't suffer from the big endian problem anymore (messed up in game colours)
So a Voodoo 3000 is highly recommended but if you feel you must have 32mb graphics memory you should get a Voodoo 5500

A bunch of ol' A500's

I think there is is a difference in color depth though.  VD-3 can only go 16-bit while the 5 can go to 32-bit depth...  I need to find the post with this info though...

FOUND IT!!!!

Interesting... well... I don't see myself using any of the features that the 5500 provides.  So, it may just be a waste to try to get one.  Plus, the extra heat may be a problem since I am putting this into a 4000Di card (original desktop.

I´ll be happy to throw out my oversized, power-hungry voodoo 5 and replace it with a voodoo 3 since it seems like it´s of no use anyway... I just hope I´ll be lucky enough to find one...
