G-Force 040... upgrade to 060?
« on: April 26, 2006, 04:29:38 PM »
Hi All,

I have an G-Force 040 card for my A2000 and I was wondering if it is possible to swap it with an 060?  Any ideas?

I assume I would need to update the roms and make a few jumper changes, at least.

I'd forget about it.  First off, you'd need physically the extra set of 060 pins not present on the GVP board.  There are such 68040 to 68060 socket designs out there, but it would be a $$$ way of finding out.  Even then, there'd be problems with timing, glue logic etc.  You'd probably be better off maybe trying to overclock the 040 to 40MHz by changing the crystal oscillator.  Don't even know if that would work though.

If the G-Force 040 can support the lower voltages, it theoritcally should work.
Check out the following site:

G-Force 040 info

I didn't see any mention of 060 support so I doubt it.

Oh well... I know you can upgrade the other GVP 040 board because it is the same board as the GVP 060.  I was hoping maybe someone had hacked this too.

As for my GVP-040 combo, it already is 40mhz.  So, it's pretty damn fast.  In fact, I bet I could bump it up to 50mhz pretty easily.

How did you bump it up to 40MHz?  I assume you changed the 16.x MHz oscillator to 20MHz.  Did you also upgrade the cpu to a full 40MHz version?

As for the 'other' gvp board, you mean the TrexxI for the A3000/4000?  It is physically a bit different that the true 68060 TRexxII gvp board made by GVP-M.  It has a max of 32Mb using GVP simms and is a 5V board, unlike the 3.3V 68060 version.
