pc cd drive on a1200 standard
« on: April 25, 2006, 02:08:46 PM »
Given that i get the correct ide cable and a 12volt power supply, is it possible to run a normal pc cd rom drive on a standard a1200?
thanks

Yep :-)

On eBay you can find 2.5" - 2x3.5" IDE cables, which I used for ages to connect a standard PC hard drive and CD-ROM to my A1200. You obviously need a power supply for these devices.

This is the 2.5" to 2x 3.5" cable

You may also consider a 4xIDE buffered interface

That is good news, as the amiga cd rom drives seem to be quite expensive on ebay.

Any good ideas for how to supply power to these devices?

Also does an a3000 have the correct power conectors to power pc drives?  Thanks alot

Yes.  There is no such thing as an 'Amiga CD-ROM drive' - all IDE / SCSI CD-ROM drives are multi-platform.  I used the same SCSI CD drive on an SGI, a Mac, a PC and an Amiga over time.

Lando is right about the idea of ''amiga cdrom'' there isn't anything like this. you need +12 and +5 volts to power all ide devices. a3000 psu works flowless with both scsi/ide devices. the power connector is universal and used from all platforms too. in my a1200 i power up both hd/cd from external cable.

So, does the Amiga 3000 have scsi or ide as standard?  I think it has scsi2 but I just want some confirmation.  I take it scsi and ide drives both have the same molex conectors, i dont know anything about scsi lol.
Thanks

OK so if you are interested,

This project came about from another thread in this forum

Update on fitting a slimline cdrom inside a A1200 based on the previous info.

1 x slimline Teac 224e obtained from Ebay (13.00)
1x slimline to standard cd 40 pin and power I/F to high density "D" adapter from Tranquil PC Ltd. (10.00)
1 x 4 way buffered ide I/F from Amigakit (20.00)
various 3.5" 40 way ide cables - free, lying around!
Gaffer tape for fixing and getting things to fit inside the 1200 case.

ALL PRICES ARE ROUNDED UP IN PDS AND INCLUDE VAT AND POSTAGE

File and hacksaw to cut hole in the rear, top casing.
Could't find any FDD Y power connectors (for the CDROM), so made one up {bleep}ising a US PC power supply.

It took about 6 hours to complete the project, including breadboarding everything for testing on the workbench (cum kitchen table) before shoe horning everything into the 1200 casing.
Biggest problem was connecting and finding a space for the 4 way ide adapter, I guess its not really intended for a desktop 1200.
After the hardware setup was completed I used IDEfix-97 which worked like a dream to mont the drive, only problem I have I have a CD1 and a CD3 which are both the same device, something I did, I just need to tidy that up.
I now have a cdrom inside my A1200 with a Ethernet PCMCIA / Compact Flash cards (these not together) a 500MB HDD with 3.1 ROMs and WB3.1, An Appolo 1230/40 accelerator with 64Mb fast ram all running on a modified PC powersupply.
I tried to upload  picture(s) of the setup last night but inspite of rxd. a acknowledgement from this site I'm not sure if it was rxd. Ok or where it is. I might try again to upload some pics later this week.

thanks to all on this site who gave me an insight into this project.
Ian.
