GVP 68030 card Prolems
« on: April 22, 2006, 01:40:09 PM »
Hi All,

I recently aquired an A2000HD system which was fitted with a GVP 68030 Combo card with the Ram Expansion card fitted ontop of it.  (Physically, two cards).

Anyhow, I aquired it becuase it had a "blown power supply".

So, I opened it up and it was covered in dust.  So, I took my air compressor to it to low it all out.

When I was looking the system over after that, i thought I found a major meltdown of the accelerator card.  Now that I am more relaxed, I think it might be less severe than that.

It seems that in the dead center of the accelerator portion of this card (on the back) there was a square of what appears to e a silicon type substance.  Well... I think when using my air compressor, I blew that square of substance off the board and onto the Motherboard.

Does this sound possible?

If so, am I screwed?

Any suggestions for cleaning this up b4 I try the power supply from my other A2000 and hope this system works?

Any advice would be great.  I may be able to provide photos later tonight.

THANKS!

I found photos of my card on amiga.resource.cx

This is a link to the photo of the back of the card and the silicon square I think I blew off... or that melted off on it's own previously:

My card is the A3001 (Series II)

I think that you're okay.  I believe that pad to just be a rubber spacer when the rear RAM board is installed.  The adhesive on the bottom of the pad probably just got old and dried up - and the pad fell off.  I don't think it's much to worry about at all.  You could most likely find a piece of double-sided tape and re-attach it.

I'm getting an A2000 in a couple of weeks (bought recently from Redrumloa) that has a GVP board fitted.  I can have a look then and get back to you.

Sounds good to me...

Actually... the big problem is that it didn't just fall off... it came off like a liquid/paste....  almost like it melted... So, there is definetly no re-attaching.  :)  And, of course, I am worried aout getting it off the motheroard before I try to boot up this system for the first time.

So, you think it's just a very soft rubber that a kinda blew apart?

Perhaps my compressor had a bit of water in it... that liquified it?

The rubber used in these sorts of things tends to perish over time - back when I was a sysadmin, I had to spend huge amounts of time cleaning bits of liquified rubber off desks when moving machines between offices. Acetone ought to get rid of it and shouldn't damage your motherboard (though wait a little while before trying it to give other people a chance to point out that it's actually stupendously dangerous...)

Yup, you must have some sort of nuclear powered compressed air there...  Those pads are a rubber-like substance, like the rubber feet on some computer cases.  If the propellant in the compressed air container made some weird chemical reaction, then I wouldn't be using that thing inside anymore.  Any odd rashes lately???  (grin)

Well... thanks for all your info guys.

I actually used rubbing alcohol and nearly an entire box of cotton swabs.  After about 2.5 hours, I had removed ALL signs of this rubber thing ever having melted down in my case.

Then...  I adapted an ATX power supply (since my A2000 supply was dead)... and... ya!  WOrking 030 A2000!

Thanks for all the help!
