Amiga TV/Monitor?
« on: April 19, 2006, 10:33:01 AM »
I have just bought myself an Amiga 500 which I used to own in the early 90's. I don't have a spare tv at the moment and was wondering how difficult it is to connect it to a modern pc monitor.

Hope someone can help

Cheers Paul

Modern PC Monitors operate at around 31 Hz and Amigas generate PAL (or NTSC) signals at 15Hz which PC Monitor cannot display. So, to view Amiga signals you need a Scan Doubler to use with PC Monitors.
You also need Workbench 3.0 or later to use the new display nodes such as DBLPAL, VGA Only etc.

Check out AmigaKit shop for one:

Not if you're using a scandoubler. The scandoubler uses the Amiga's standard PAL/NTSC screenmodes. There's no need to use DBLPAL or VGAOnly if you've got a scandoubler.

DblPAL etc. don't work on the A500 anyway. You need AGA chipset for these modes. And you should not try them with a scandoubler. Modern scandoublers automatically switch off and pass the signal through, but older scandoublers might be destroyed when switching to DblPAL.

Bye,
Thomas

Hi Paul, welcome to A.org - don't be too put off by the technobabble and use of jargon/acronyms.
Did the Amiga 500 you bought come with the TV modulator (you must remember from your old amiga) which you needed to connect it to a tv?
If not, then you either need to get one of these, or use a monitor capable of displaying amiga modes.

Hope you get it up and running.
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Hi,

You may also like to know that this topic has been discussed rather a lot in this forum, in some detail.  If you do a search of the forum posts, you can probably come up with a lot more info on the topic.  I'm not sure how long the old posts are kept for though.

Good luck,

Oli
