Hard Drive Installation
« on: April 10, 2006, 11:19:46 PM »
I've recently attempted to install various hard drives into my A600 without any success.  I think the main problem - apart from not remembering how to do it (it's over fifteen years since I last installed a HD on my A1200)- is that I'm not using the proper install software.

Should I be using a dedicated HD installation disk?  I've this nagging feeling that I've got such a disk (in the loft somewhere) that came with the 256Mb HD that I bought for my A1200.

The software I've used recently is HDToolBox.  However, after scanning through some of the threads within this forum, I believe that I should also be using 'HDPrep' - is this right?

The problems that I experience are that I get an error message saying that L:fastfilesystem (or similar) is missing and the HD partitions don't have a 'default tool'.  Can anyone shed any light on this?

I should also add that the disks I'm trying to install are:

30Mb Conner (original drive from the 'other' A600; 130Mb IBM from an old laptop - which incidentally isn't recognised at all by HDToolBox (but is definitely a live specimen); and an 800Mb(ish) Toshiba HD.

Many thanks in advance for any help received.

Just download HDInstTools from Aminet.  This is a great program to prep and partition the HD

what version of rom has the a600 and what workbench disks you have? the workbench3.0 and 3.1 have an install disk and with this disk you boot and running hdtoolbox to do the instalation and partitioning of the disk. i don't know though what happens with earlyer workbench as 2.1 and 2.04

If i am going to have bugs on my system,

Using HDInstTools I was able to get a 4GB 2.5" HD prepped and installed on my A600 3.1 ROM no problems!

Yes, make sure that you have Kickstart ROM 2.05 37.350 not the 37.300 that shipped in early A600's.  I just happen to have one up for sale on eBay right now...  (shameful plug)

Thanks for the rapid response guys.  Not too sure on the rom version in the A600 (I've put it back together again - doh!) - all I can say is that it is a genuine HD model and came with WB2.05.  I was attempting to do the HD install with HDToolBox copied from my A1200's HD - WB3.0.

@Amigakit & TjLaZer - I think you've hit the nail on the head - HDInstTools sounds just what I need to get the job done.  Cheers.

Right - I'm off to Aminet....
