thoughts on OS 4 and AMIGA ONE
« on: April 25, 2003, 08:22:44 AM »
POP on in and tell the world what you want on Amiga.
I'm not talking about just  ports of software from other systems,  I see that as the easy way out now there is whole new system and OS that is slowly coming with the computer. What programmes do you want? What kind of software do you want to see on the Amiga and that you can call your own? How about some ralley serious software like Mathamaticer ora new type of light- wave or perhaps a new interagted pack like Word etc and a daatbase program that can receive files from your mobile phone? What are your thoughts ????????????

My main thought is that using that many questionmarks is a sure sign of insanity ;-)

On topic though for me:

1. A good text editor with syntax highlighting
2. A good set of C/C++ development tools including
visual debugger.
3. CVS server and client

Hate figure.

3. CVS server and client

The client is already here (on Aminet) and it's better than any X or Win equivalent because it's integrated with SSH... One binary for doing CVS access through SSH...

If we could get Lightwave back on the Amiga, that would be good!

An Office suite as powerful as Microsoft Office and StarOffice, that also provides 100% compatibility with this software. Then perhaps the Amiga will stand a chance of becoming a viable business machine.
Amiga Office 2004, anyone?!!

;-) One program that I’d like to see on AmigaOS 4 is Imagine 6.  I ordered that title through Impulse’s Constant Upgrade Program (C.U.P.) shortly after version 5 was released.

 I’ve been waiting ever since.  Impulse wanted to make the program more operating system compliant, and made the decision to wait until the new version of AmigaOS was released first.  It’s been a while now…

I'd like to see a MED style tracker that can be used like ACID Pro. So one can play a sound on MIDI / keyboard and edit it like ACID. sort of a hybrid between key and sample based progs.

ohh, almost forgot java  :-D  :-D
My name is Filson. I solve problems.

It's not Impulse that's responsible for the Amiga CUP.
Martin Mackenzie has taken up the reigns to bring Imagine to full PPC code.
Currently he is working with Hyperion as one of the programmers on OS4. When his work there is done, he will restart work on Imagine.

That's good news. I hope though it won't be that butt ugly as the windows version.

I doubt very much that it will.
AFAIK, work had been done (completed?) on getting Imagine to follow Amiga style guides, rather that the ghastly default of Imagine. See here. for pictures. It certainly makes many of the requesters far more user friendly. If (as I'm sure it will) it utilizes the OS4 GUI improvements, it'll look just how you want it to.

wow thanks for that link.

I think they forgot what a 'constant' update program is.....

but nevertheless Imagine for OS 4 would be great news indeed, and that GUI update was badly needed, had a 2.X look to it....

otherwise a fine program though, will be well accelerated with full ppc support too :-)

Well, at least is is going to progress.
Interesting fact gleaned from the Imagine ML is that the PC CUP only has 80 subscribers in it.
Given the size of the Amiga market compared to the PC one, how many subscribers do you think IFA has?

I've definately got this on my 'to buy' list when OS4 is out. I've just got myself getting used to Imagine4.0 again, running ontop of WinUAE. Render times are a whole heap better than my 1200/060 and I expect a G4@800MHz+ to be even better with native PPC code.

:-? If Mr. MacKenzie has taken over the development of Imagine 6 from Impulse, that’s fine.  Just as long as he recognizes that he has inherited their obligations along with their assets.

I sent $100.00 dollars to Impulse for version 6, many years ago.  Once AmigaOS 4 is complete, I fully expect my copy of Imagine v.6, free of charge, along with a letter of thanks for the patience I’ve shown.
