Have new A1200 today

Hello All:

Well I did make the trade for my A3000 for this A1200 with Blizzard card inside of it.  ALso the fellow gave me a higher powered modified Power Supply with it.

I am now left with getting it to work with my SVGA monitor and decided I would like to go the video card route instead of the flicker fixer/adapter that sells at Amigakit.com for around $157 USD.

The question I have is, if I should find a video card (and which one I need) or find a Commodore Monitor that will just hook up?

Opinions are great on this!  Also, if you have one of these, I am interested!!!

If you can find one the commodore 1960 monitor will work with your 1200 as is and suports most of the modes that you can throw at it including the DBL NTSC high rez modes.

Unfortunatly I just sold mine to a guy in Spokane WA about 3 weeks ago and I know they are hard to find in working condition. Ebay may be one place but I saw one go for $300 last month :-o

Hi,

Other Amiga-compatible monitors that display all of the A1200's screenmodes are the Microvitec 1483 (these were a popular choice in the UK) or the Acorn AKF50 (which was just a rebranded Microvitec). You may find one on eBay, though I'm not sure on their availability outside Europe.

Microvitec still makes such monitors but as they're now a specialist item, expect to pay lots for a new one. See Microvitec's web site for further details - the model in question is the Desk-Scan 1402.

You had one built into the Amiga 3000... That would allow you to use a SVGA screen. But now you have to go and spend *MORE* money to get the same out of a A1200. :crazy: :smack:

Thank-you Captain Obvious. :-)  Yes I had a good video card in my A3000, but decided to trade to enable me to get the keyboard and mouse (keyboard is built into the A1200) and lets not forget that this one has the Blizzard card so it has a faster processor and I can update the RAM using 72 pin SIMMs now.  This (in my mind) makes up for the lack of built in SVGA adapter.

You have no chance of installing a graphics card in an A1200; the only option is a BVision graphics card which needs a BPPC board. Otherwise you need to tower the A1200 to use Zorro cards.

Therefore, your only option is to get a scandoubler/flickerfixer (which you apparently aren't going to do) or a suitable monitor.

A shame you are in the US. Have a prefectly good working C= 1960 monitor right here that is doing nothing, but it's local pickup only...

Sometimes I think it is a shame that I live in the US ;-)  Yeah, I would prefer local pickup for the Kansas City Metropolitan area for a monitor myself... heck I'd drive up to  100 miles to pick up a monitor for the cost of shipping.

I saw this adapter and wondered what modes other than these are there?

  Euro 36Hz and 72Hz
  Multiscan/Productivity
  Super72
  VGA Only

link to the adapter at Amigakit.  Would flicker be a problem with this adapter?  Has anyone used it?

That adapter won't solve the flicker problem unless your software uses the system-friendly Intuition screen opening routines so that you can use mode promotion.  And the biggest problem is that the internal scan-doubling circuitry on the AGA chipset is that it slows down terribly when you are using DBLPAL or DBLNTSC.

The main ones that won't work with that adapter are PAL and NTSC which are the main ones that most software uses.

I was not the only one that said you'd be better off with the A3000, verses a A1200.

I do know what style of case the A1200 is in, as mine is sitting right here next to me on my (messy) desk.

When using 31Khz modes with the SVGA to Amiga monitor adapter, the refresh rate is superior to normal Amiga screens and there is no flicker as these are not interlaced modes.

These display modes are better for Wordprocesssing etc due to the enhanced refresh rates.
