Odd system failures
« on: April 03, 2006, 09:34:05 AM »
Been having these really strange system failures since
my last 3.9 installation about a month ago.

I was hoping some of you may have a clue on whats wrong.

My system is A4000T, CSPPC 604/233 060/64 128Mb, with
mediator Voodoo 5500, Delfina DSP.

My system is a clean install from 3.1 to 3.9 with both
boing bags. I did change the powerpc.library to the
"de Ville" version (16.1 beta).

System failures consists of random craches (hangups),
which seems to happen when resizing windows, requesters
are being opened etc. Typically, choosing "Load Image"
in ppaint, then everything just dies.

Other symptoms, gears demo dies after ca 15 mins.

Any idea if I missed a must-have patch out there
somewhere?

System is pretty much useless with this behaviour.
Any help is appreciated.

Happens only with 3.9.
3.1 is rock steady.

Maybe it's to do with the version of 040/060/PPC libraries that 3.9 has installed. Try overwriting the ones in your 3.9 install with the ones from 3.1. Back them up first though :-)

mmu variable is set to 'no'. I checked that.

What versions of 040/060 libs should I use? I havent checked those, i assumed the correct ones were installed with 3.9.

The Voodoo is connected to the power supply in the A4000T, ie with standard HD/CD-rom/etc type of power cables. No separate power supply.

I assume your accelerator doesn't have an MMU then?

Don't assume they're correct. If the ones in your 3.1 installation work then use them.

I think that's what he means - it's not powered solely from the PCI bus but needs and extra power connector.

Hi, yes - I meant the extra power cable from your psu powering the voodoo 5500.

Apologies - forget the 040/060 libraries thing, the CSPPC (like the BPPC) should have the correct libraries in flashrom - you don't need to install any 040/060 libs onto your hard drive.  You could check to make sure you have the latest flashrom updates though.

On next thoughts, I'd definitely try some different simms just to be on the safe side.

CSPPC doesn't have any 68k libs in flashrom.

Try this set if you haven't already.

Latest 680x0 libs

If you have problem with the 68060.library 46.15 in those archive, replace it with the one (46.7) bundled in this one:

680x0 by Phase5

Really?  Well, live and learn.  Never been lucky enough to own one.  I assumed it had similar flash to the blizzard ppc.  Seems damned silly to have to manually install the libraries for the cpu when there's flash memory on the board.

Thanks Framiga :-)
