Mediator trouble
« on: April 22, 2003, 06:32:33 PM »
Hi!

I´m having some troubles with the Sblaster in the mediator.

I have a Mediator 1200 with Voodoo 3 3000, SB128,Fast Ethernet and Tv.The rest of the system is  PPC 040, 96 Fast and Elbox Fast ATA.

The problem with the SBlaster is that there is ALWAYS al fuzzy sound while reproduccing a sound, passing throught the paula sound or not doing nothing. The sound is something like "Shshshshshshs".

I hace spoken with another mediator users and they said to me that they have an option called "3D control" in the Mixer program.Mine lacks.

The sound blaster is a 5507 with 2 sound outputs.

I will make me crazy
Thx in advance

ELBOX just released mediator update 3.7 plus 1.23 CD-up today...

Nothing is wrong with your setup
That is the Nature of SoundBlasters
SoundBlaster MAKES CRAP!!!!!
That is why it is the number one selling PC sound card.
I have said it a thousand times.
I will say it again SB cards are the worst pieces of junk going.
For some stupid reason Amiga users insist that SB drivers be provided. They must believe the stupid brain dead PC users who say that they are good.

Soundblasters with one exception the A2 all the rest are pure garbage. I monitor my sound system through mixer and a Amp. connected to a pair of Sennheiser HD600 headphones and the hiss produced by a Soundblaster would drive me insane get a cheapie ESS solo1 sound card by IBM and you would have less noise or better yet get a 1200SX and use a Abit AU10 sound card or one of the mushroom cards far better sound quality.

this also might help but not eliminate the noise you turn off all unused inputs and lower all the setting below 75% this prevents the SB from amplifing the selfnoise the crude generates. Also make sure that the Card cage the SB screws into is grounded to the case and the power supply this also might help.

ohh Here is a list of some sound cards that are based on the FM801AS/AU chips
this list is good for the mediator4000/1200SX

Abit AU10
Atrends MSC-3DS801
Best Data Theatrix
Galant Odyssey Sound 4
Genius SoundMaker live 5.1
Genius SoundMaker live 5.1DVD
Genius SoundMaker 32X2
Hitpoints 4-trans PCI4
Hitpoints Dr Sound 2.1
HitPoint H801-2Ch
Hitpoint H801-4ch
Hitpoint H801-5.1-OF
Hitpoint ALS-4000
Hitpoint Blackgold 5.1D
Hitpoint Musonic 5.1
Jaton Sonwave SR4
Jaton Sonwave SR6
Mediaforte PCI 256-3D
Mediaforte Quad Extreme 256
Mediaforte Quad Extreme 256R
Mediaforte Thearte X-treme 5.1
Mediaforte True Blue PC DVD Thearte Kit
Mediatek Sound Image SY-6IX
Mediatek Sound Images SY-4X4
Mediatek Sound Image Value
Mushroom Siren Audio I
Mushroom Siren Audio I plus
Skywell's Magic Sound Live
TerraTec SoundSystem 512I

I have an Abit AU-10 it comes with a infrared remote that plugs into your keyboard adapter. it works on my setup.  noise level is many times lower then the SB PCI128 cards I tried until Elbox released the TM801 drivers

i agree totally with kuRT on this one, only crap by sb.. , mainly because its cheap and budget stuff, better models is always better..but how do u know when u buy it??

i hope that we could move away from sb soon, and besides it stinks in the mediator, soundquality is better than paula but cpu load is 100% more than with paula, the flipper doent :=)

anyway i have my sb128 still, since i need an fm card and a mediator SX to use it...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh...

Try using some decent speakers instead of cheap budget crap and chuck the 128 soundblaster out and get a 5.1 live there is no other sound card that is as good as soundblasters.sounblasters also give better frame rates with games on pc,s something proven many times.if they are crap the reviews would not recomend them over  sound cards . :-D

Don't rule out a software problem - the sound on my PC is way noisier under Linux than Windows - go figure..

Might I just add ¨don't believe anything you read' - reviews tend to be greatly biased. Some are just better at hiding it than others.

Anyway; With all this soundblaster talk, I was wondering...does the soundblaster have a gameport? If so, does the mediator support that? And then again: do any games at all support analogue joysticks? I suspect it is possible to play q2 with a joystick in the pc version. Not that I would ever do it, but if it is possible on the amiga version, my hope is that it will be possible in the great car/flight simulations Hyperion is going to port (right? :-)).

Oh, and is there any way to make our famous joysticks work with an amigaOne?

Sincerely,

-Kenneth Straarup.

And why would more than one magazine be biased towards one card when there is nothing they would gain apart from a 100,000 people complaining over a dud recomendation, dont be so daft as to say there biased because just because  your setup is crap.

amigamad. looooooooooooool , and how big is the pc userbase? , 100.000 u said... well ok thats like 0.1% of the actaul pc market.... does that prove anything?

what was yur point btw? , the soundblaster cards was cheap and was sold in quantyties and not cauze of its quality...they had the drivers ....thats all.

if u go up to audigy level or 5.1 etc..ok i will agree with u in some points, but remeber  the soundblaster cards (especially the ones we are talking about in this thread) is heavy on the cpu load, no matter what cpu u have it will always drag it down.

anyway to the guy who have problems, go to the unoficcial mediator site, yes the unof one... and grab the sb patchint fixes, it will help u i guess, it did for me anyway.

cheers

Well Creative aren't exactly known for the quality of their sound cards, but because they're cheap and ubiquitous.

I, for one, have no intention of getting a SB for my future A1, but intend to use the onboard audio untill proper sound cards are supported (24bit ones) and don't mention the Audigy, after the stunt they pulled with the first version, i simply don't trust them (selling a 16bit sound card as a 24bit one is grounds for execution, IMO  :-x  ).

I have tried over 12 different supported cards in my Mediator board trying to get one that elusive 3D support enabled (Each different type of chipset utilised) and not had a functioning 3D option. Most of my m8s on IRC with Mediator setups have not seen this option available either. (I have given up on that ability for now)

The only person I have know to have had the 3D option working was Richard Brooklyn (Ribs), he who wrote the Mixer interface program (and Medication) and that was probably because he recieved a sound card off Elbox to do the program with - he said it sounded great at the time.

As for the PatchInt files being available on the unofficial Mediator site, unfortunately they are not there at the moment, I do plan to upload them at somepoint (as well as the redesign).

If you are after the PatchInt files they are available from the following URL:
Matthew Allatts Website - PatchInt Author......

You shouldnt actually need to use this program anymore though as Elbox added a option in one of the previous Mediator updates that allows you to select the PatchInt option via setting one of the Env entries (I cant recall which setting that was at the mo though)
