Blizzard it is!

Next question... is it worth upgrading to 3.1 kickroms from 3.0?

If you want to use OS 3.5 or 3.9, yeah. Otherwise, probably not. Although, with a Blizzard you can softkick 3.1. This is illegal, though.

Doesn't 3.5 and 3.9 only come on CD?

I have been looking for 3.5 but so far I have not seen it on a floppy... That was on ebay tho...

Yeah, 3.1 was the last floppy based release.

In my best assumption I'd have to take the Blizzard, however Viper feels like getting there.

What benefits would I be looking at by upgrading to 3.5?

Get OS 3.9 and a cd-rom drive... What you get? The latest released Os for the Amiga classic! I would never go back :)

Not really. Kickstart 3.1 is bug fixed 3.0 but differences are not very great. KS 3.1 enables running AOS 3.5/3.9 though, also known as Aminet Patch Collection.

@kiniki, krize:

You dont need a CD-ROM to install 3.5/3.9. You can for example archive the 3.5/3.9 CD on another machine, transfer it to your Amiga via network/nullmodem, then extract it onto a partition of your harddrive and rename that partition to the same name as the 3.5/3.9 CD.

There are many other ways to transfer the data to your Amiga though, to mention some:
- Put the contents of the 3.5/3.9 CD onto a Compact Flash card and use a PCMCIA->CF adapter to read it on the Amiga.
- Put the Amiga harddrive in a pc with WinUAE and install 3.9 there.

Is it really illegal though?

I own an A1200, I have a licence to use the 3.0 Roms. Would the copyright owners really begrudge me softkicking the 3.1 Roms, the difference being just a few buigfixes?

In PC land flashing your motherboard bios is offered as 'support'.
In Amiga land, updating your kickstart by a minor revision is 'illegal'.

Another advantage of using real Kickstart 3.1 ROMs is to use NSDPatch et al to allow the use of larger than 4GB hard disks on your A1200

BTW: If your A1200 doesn't have a CDROM, any original AmigaOS 3.5 CD or AmigaOS 3.9 CD bought from www.amigakit.com can be installed onto another medium when bought at the same time such as a PCMCIA to CF adapter or 2.5" hard disk.
