Magnum Turbo 1230 Mk2 for A1200

Hi there,
I just bought one Magnum Turbo 1230 Mk2 (with 64 mb ram although i know it's a bit dificcult to fit both simms in the classic desktop 1200) off e-bay a couple of days ago and I would be interested in hearing opinions on this accelerator board, good and bad points, disadvantages etc. I already know that it's a bit dated now but since i couldn't afford a better one that's ok for me in order to breathe a lease of life in my old but trusty 1200.

I am not familiar with this specific card. In general though, an '030 card will make a very noticeable difference in performance.
I still use one A1200 with an old DKB 68030, 33MHz (Cobra, I think) with 64Mb of RAM. My system has been working with no problems for over ten years now.....
If you have never added an accelerator to a 1200, be careful of the fit near the socket, where the motherboard's shielding bends down. You may have to bend the shield up a little, so it can't short the traces on the card. Just give it a trial fit, and check that area very carefully.
To be honest, the '030 is an excellent choice, specially if you want to run older software/games.

I have owned two Magnum cards, both were 040s though.  They both performed superbly for years.  The first one I traded for a Blizzard 060 (sneakily done by Analogic, the price certainly didn't mention a trade-in).  The last one I thought was knackered, but recently I dug it out, unseated the chips and scrubbed inside and out with a toothbrush and away it went!  It's now installed in my 3rd best setup.

Things to note - (for the 040 version at least...)

PCMCIA works fine, I have an Alpha-Data CD-Rom controller attatched.  

It may only take max 32MB Ram, double sided is OK, but only quite narrow ones.  

It may need Magnum specific software.

Ask the Apollo 1230 Mk2 owners for advice. It's the very same card, no "special Magnum software" is needed.
Also the Magnum 1240 = Apollo 1240 = Winner 1240 = Paragon 1240.

I have the same card as you, there is a Disk with software for the Magnum/s

There is a prog which puts Kickstart into fast RAM.

The Magnum Turbo 1230 Mk2 accelerator card works great. It's just a rebadged Apollo Turbo 1230 Mk2 card.  I've not had any problems using it for games.  I've got 16Mb on mine at the moment.   WHDLOAD games load fine with this accelerator card.

This card allows 32Mb max with one socket or 64Mb max with the extra SIMM socket soldered to the other side of the card.  Something I might try is to solder a low profile 72-pin SIMM socket onto the other side of the card. Then I can stick two 32Mb simms onto the card.  Though I'm not too sure if another SIMM can fit onto the otherside of the card, inside the Amiga case.

There's 3 jumpers on the Magnum card labelled RAM, SCSI and WAIT.
I don't have the manual so I've no idea how to configure them.  Other than to say that I've got the following configuration and it works fine:  RAM jumpered, SCSI and WAIT are unjumpered.


What are your speed measurements with the Magnum card using the sysinfo utility?  Here's mine:

Dhrystones: 7717
Mips: 8.05

Ran the test again today but this time it says:
Dhrystones: 7887
Mips: 8.23
