Well I guess if you are a Linux user you are gonna be excited about this. To me this looks like a serious example of a copycat. I wonder what MacOS people think of this..

Check it out guys, it's a cool video..

How is it possible to "copy" something that doesn't exist?

Vista is in a great number of hands for "beta" right now. It's easy to stand on the shoulders of giants, rather than come up with something unique and new yourself.

couldn't they patent all the functionality of it upto the hilt, then microsoft would have to rejig the whole OS?

A500, A600, A1200x3, A2000, A3000, A4000 & a CD32.
and probably just like the rest of you, crates full of related "treasure" for the above XD

Do you really want to get into who's copying who.. I am quite sure microsoft has a number of patents and this could become a lawsuit if they really cared..

And we'd see if the patents get overturned or not.   :-D

I got bored of watching after about 15 seconds. I'll wait for it to hit the headlines if anything actually comes of it

That's why it's in an "Alternative Operating Systems" forum.

1. I didn't whacht it.

2. but, I open my big mouth :

I really like linux, but I hate the way KDE copies winblows behavior, style, look, whatever.

I use linux, because, is different, more the way I think, and really hate winblows and its look & feel (nd stupidizing attitude). Why they copy !?!.

I just don't understand it. The tree button on the right of this ff window look exactly like the ones in w9x... (I'll end installing WIndowMaker here also...)

If I want something that looks like... I'll rather use the original.

For a while I used the BeOS look&feel, but in my main machine at home, I have the openstep derived WindowMaker, faster, simply faster than kde. (I don't get custom to gnome, and think that is too bloated).
btw, the idea that a browser should also be a files browser is odd. If I what a file browser, mc is my solution.

I remember the old linux days when fmw95 existed, why, I just keep me asking why ?!.

I know moco$oft also copies a lot from linux, but copying back... please no more ! (Or I'll have to switch to MacOSX!)
(Or make an amiga accelerator powerful enough to run todays apps....)

just my thoughts.  :-P

XGL has been out for a good few weeks/months now, it was a secret project by Novel, I think I read somewhere its been a number of years in development and is quite a feet when you consider Novel has written a whole new X server and the compose manager. Its considered beta probably even alpha software atm, so isn't stable. Linux distros like Ubuntu have it in there development release (dapper) which is only possible because of the nature of the GPL license :-)

Redhad has been developing a similar product to Novel but uses the standard X server I believe and just adds extension's to it (although Ive not read much about this).

:-)

I use both AOS and Linux :-D

Novell had some experience with X servers due to their port of XFree86 to Netware (in ver 5.0, 1998/9), may be was the same team, may be not, I just wonder how much they have to modify it to make it run, Netware had memory protection starting in that version. A bit late to try to convert it in an application server, though

I tested the livecd offered, and looks quite fancy. Iwas just wondering how much cpu meeds. Moving a window around maxes the cpu, but in Xgl was not the case.
