Which 68k-machine to get an 6888x from for my A1200 ?

Hello folks,

I am new to this forum, it's great ! Now, for my
first post, I have a question:

I have an A1200 with a Blizzard 1220/4 which I'd like
to expand with an FPU (68881/68882). Does anybody
know a non-Amiga machine, where I could rip an
PLCC-version out ? I'm here at a university and
we have dozens of various old machines (Mac, Alpha, SGI)
which are being kicked away now, so there might be
hope to find the appropriate FPU.

Also, are there any projects to build your own
Turbo-board I mean there are so many 030/040-CPUs
floating around for free, but the turbo-boards for
an Amiga are quite expensive  (at least for a student ).

Best bet would be the macs, also keep a look out for any old dumb terminals, I remember picking up a load of tektronics dumb terminals with 030s in when I was at uni - although theres no hope for fpus in dumb terminals.

Why dont you open up one of the thrown out machines extract the fpu and see it if works/ fits?
 its a 68882 or something isnt it?

i imagine the "higher spec" macs of the time came with an fpu..

The Mac IIci had a 6888x in it ... probably 68882, but cant remember - its at home, I'm not !

the CPU was certainly a 68030 at 25 MHz.

Hi,

just ripped an Mac IIsi apart and it had one
on the Nubus-board, but it's been soldered in
though  :roll: But I have someone to unsolder
it for me. (I know I could just buy the one
from Vesalia, but I will try this one first,
I like fiddling with old hardware ).

The IIci has a 25MHz 68882.

I will rip it out now for my A1200. The 030 has already found a new home in an former broken A3000T.

The IIsi has just the 20MHz-version, but I can
set the Blizzard to operate the FPU at just
14 MHz Was the 68882 in the IIci socketed
or soldered ?

I would get the 50Mhz PGA if you have a Blizzard 1230-IV, I'm not sure if 33MHz will work properly (or at least efficiently) with a 50Mhz '030.

There's also space on the SX32/Pro for a PGA FPU.

Dumb terminals often have NAND Eeprom drives of 256MB or less which, when ripped out, can be plugged into the A1200 IDE interface to give you a super-fast solid-state disk!

Be careful when removing the PGA ones at least - the pins are extremely fragile.

Slightly off-topic but has anyone ever seen a plug-in clock for the A1200's clockport on eBay or somewhere?
