new to PDAs
« on: March 22, 2006, 04:08:06 AM »
Hi, I'm new to PDA's.

I think that stands for "personal desktop accessory,"
but I think it should stand for "personal workbench accessory."

I think PDA's were designed to be like decentralized support hardware for the mothership -- that being your primary desktop or tower PC.

I was wondering whether anyone has released a PDA for Amiga OS, with OS3.9 or OS4.0 -- or better, a PDA with hardware. A PDA could also be a way for "Amiga" to re-use pre-existing hardware at smaller investment.

For a person who does a lot of writing, piling box after box of notebooks just isn't going to work out forever -- eventually they mutiny because there's no space aboard one's "ship."

Really, I need to be more organized, and I want to use a PDA to preserve my scribbles & ideas & to make extra copies.

A PDA should be ideal with the Amiga environment, because Amiga has a superior, well-tested OS. Just imagine writing code with a pen and seeing everything transformed into a program or file. You get the idea. If you already do most of your work with pen or pencil, there is no need to type. And if you don't, you can usually get a keyboard for accessory.

Could Amiga come out with a PDA using existing technology? Why not ask that question.

Well the Freidens from Hyperion have stated that they have Amiga OS 4.0 running on a PPC PDA (Personal Digital Assistant).

I say, yeah I checked out Hyperion's site and caught up on reading about OS4. Wow, I'm going to miss not having it. But let's see if I got this down: You can get OS4 now, but only if u order a Gx AmigaOne board? So that means that OS4 isn't complete, but waiting for its API basically, and when its API gets ready it should be shipping for anyone to purchase.

I took a look on eBay at the PPC PDA's (Thanks for clarifying that acronym. I guess I like mine better, but I'm looking at Amiga programming stuff).  After about half an hour of research, I stumbled across this link that displayed partial list of PPC devices.

An hour later I came across this find on PPCs. Same PPCs? (I sort of wish the information technology community had their own WIKI, because Wikipedia looks overspecialized to me.)

I was most impressed with this product, because of its higher resolution and voice recording convenience. This could definitely go well to complement Amiga Forever/UAE. However, this product probably does not exist, and its price tag probably works better to tease than to acquire for someone like me. Besides, I don't know about those model numbers - Intel X-Scale. Was this a PPC or just another Intel product?? Wikipedia doesn't say so.

This item was also a notible find - physics of Star Trek come to mind, really. . .like real freak-out(!).

Just samples, but I'm new to PDAs.

As of yet, I've hit nothing in my price range (<=~$100), and I've found no decent PDA after more than an hour of research. Finding a PPC isn't easy -- looking at various articles, specs don't always spell out "PPC." I want to look for the BOING BALL on any PDA listing for Amiga Anywhere compatibility. Would be nice if qualifying PDAs had boing ball on their body or ads, but I'll settle for a WIKI list from Hyperion or even Wikipedia.

I would lobby for this at Amiga University, but my email bounced to AU's webmaster & the site looks stagnant-since-2002.

Oh yeah -- Amiga appears to be offering a contest on any store purchase from someplace for anyone whom would like to go anywhere else, so I'm off to check that out.
