A1200 Hard Drive install
« on: March 03, 2006, 05:46:30 PM »
HELP PLEASE FIRST TIME AMIGA HD INSTALL!!

I have just got my hands on a A1200, and a 44pin 2.5" AMIGA IDE connector.

I have a 12GB IBM laptop HD(Works on PC).
I have opened up the A1200 and have connected the HD to the Mainboard with the IDE cable.
When I power-up the A1200 and load workbench 3.0 from floppy, I enter Shell and attempt to change the DIR to HD0: ???
I have also tried looking in the BOOT MENU (holding both mouse button's when powering up), but I only see the default devices

DF0: & CC0:

There does not seem to be any Hard Drive relevent device present?

If I listen carefully I can tell that the Laptop HD is powed and running..

Is the lack of a HD0: ?? meaning that the Hard Drive is not compatable with the A1200?

Can anyone email a ADF to format the HD or is it all the required software in workbench/Extras 3.0?

I can remove the HD and reconnect to My PC to create a sutible partition etc if needed.

just the A1000 left! and up for sale...email!

You need HDInstTools from Aminet to prep, partition and format the hard disk first.  However because the HD is bigger than 4GB you will need IDEFIX if you have 3.0 ROMs and a suitable filesystem such as SmartFileSystem.

If you have 3.1 ROMs you will need NSDPatch, PatchStrip and SFS.

the software that you need is the HDToolBox. normaly is in the install disk of workbench. the 3.0 wb came without an install disk at first but if you have one go and boot from it. if you have wb3.1 disks is even better. run the HDToolBox, it will ''see'' the hard disk, it will ask to install it, you have to say yes, and after that go to partition the disk. make a no more than 512mb boot partition and all the other partitions no more than 2gb. install the file FastFileSystem in the disk, you will find it in the directory L of the install3.0 or 3.1 disk. after all the setup, press save and reboot with the workbench disk in. format the boot partition and reboot with install disk to install the workbench :-)
wb3.0 and 3.1 can't see easy big disks and partitons without some patches that may you need in the future. for now go this way.

-edit-
if you don't have install disk use the tools that amigakit propose in a similar way. :-)
A3040/25 AmigaOS 3.9

Sam440ep AmigaOS 4.1.2
PegasosII/G3 AmigaOS 4.1.2/MorphOS 2.7/Debian 5.0.7/SUSE 11.1
MacMini/G4 1.5 MorphOS 2.7/OSX 10.5.8
Long Live Amiga

If i am going to have bugs on my system,
at least let me keep the latest versions.

GETTING THERE!  :-D

Managed to mount the Hard drive. (Thanks for the tips thus far!), I now have 4 partitions!
Used Workbench 3.0 to Format them..(took ages)
Whats the simplest way to install Workbench & Extras etc onto the Primary partition (HD0:)??  :-D

Drag and drop is the quickest or DOpus

BTW:  If you are using Kickstart 3.0 and use the normal FFS and make partitions over 4GB mark then data corruption will occur.

Hopefully you gave installed the patches I recommended and a better File System such as SmartFileSystem(SFS)

Sused!
I now have WorkBench3.0 installed!  :-D
And a lovely Backup with the help of AmigaExplorer!
Many thanks to amije and everyone who contributed!

Next Question is what do I do to install software from floppy and ADF on AE?

I have seen suggestions of HDinstallers for each specific software title, or have I got this all wrong?  :-?
