AMIGA-PC NETWORK
« on: February 12, 2006, 03:09:57 AM »
Hello all!
I wish to connect my A1000 512KB KS V1.3 WB V1.3 to a pc for getting PD mods etc onto my Amiga
I've seen many PC-Link up kits on ebay etc...but the small print states Amiga requires Kickstart & Workbench 2.0 or higher?
Is there another way???
or will I need to get a cheep A500+/A600 that I can use to transfer amiga files to, then save on a floppy to finaly transfer to the A1000 ?

just the A1000 left! and up for sale...email!

DKB made a device called the KwikStart II for the A1000 that allowed the installation of 2 kickstart ROMs inside your A1000 and you could switch between which one you wanted to load at startup by holding down the reset keys for 5 seconds.  If you can find one, you could put a 1.3 ROM for playing games and a 2.04 or 3.1 ROM for networking and other tasks that require the more modern versions of the AmigaOS.   You can even leave one of the ROM sockets empty to allow you to load any kickstart from 1.0 to 1.3 from floppy disk still.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Thanks for the post!
Will my 512KB A1000 require a memory expansion to run a kickstart and Workbench greater than V1.3?
Ive seen ROM kits on ebay eg V2.xx and V3.xx
would you think that they would work on a A1000?

Yes, they will work, but you are right in stating that you should have additional RAM.  1.0 to 1.3 kickstart ROM's were 256k, but 2.0 and above were 512k.  I know others have installed 3.1 ROMs in their A1000's, so I know they work.  I think I would rather get another model of Amiga to run 3.1 or higher AmigaOS on, but that's just me.  Good luck.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

You could just get a null modem cable (a special type of serial cable for connecting two machines together), and Cloanto's Amiga Explorer.

I think it supports Workbench 1.3.

You have to load a new shell and type a series of command to get the programme onto the amiga (these are provided in the PC side of explorer). You then just have to run the programme and you can easily copy stuff to your amiga disk drives / ram disk by dragging the icon into the amiga explorer windows.

It's slow but it works.

I have a copy so I could send you one, but that would be illegal, so if you want me to, PM me.

Otherwise you can do it the proper way and buy a copy. You can buy it either on it's own or with Amiga Forever, an emulator package. I think the standalone version costs about £20.

i try this configuration in the past with pc and a1200 and is VERY SLOW. a lot of times while i was transfering files from amiga to pc or the opposite the communication was breaking down too.

-edit-
now that i have a pcmcia netcard i transfer files with amiga explorer at ~270kb/sec with tcpip. a test i run yesterday took up to 10 mins for 100mb of files.

Amigaexplorer works on 1.3 perfectly. Also, you need to have a wb 1.3 disk too boot.
