A1000 & A590?
« on: February 09, 2006, 03:16:26 AM »
OK here is a thought...

I was wondering if I could install my CBM A590HD+ onto my old A1000.

I understand that the 86 pin side expansion slots on the A500 and the A1000 are the same. Also I would not be able to autoboot, due to the A1000's Kickstart 1.2, but has anyone tried this before?

The A1000's expansion slot is on the right side, so the A590 would face back, and slightly higher, so you'd have to make a little stand. Otherwise it should work, but you can't be sure until you've tried.
Using a 1.3 Kickstart disk would enable you to boot from HDD (Kickstart from FDD, of course). Getting a ROM expansion to be able to use 2.x/3.x A500/2000 ROMs would be the next step then - might be hard to find.

I heard somewhere that A1000 bus is much more sensitive to noise than A500 so that might be a problem.
Better sorry than worry.

Yes, it works.
I used this very setup about 15 years ago.

Yes, people have used the A590 on A1000's. Boot with KS1.3 and the drive will autoboot and mem will auto-allocate.

Maybe the PAL grounding modification is needed?
Its not too hard if you can use a soldering iron

Completely useless? I can always be used as a bad example

I have an MTec AT500 sidecard for the A500, similar to the A590.  It has 8MB memory and, more importantly, a kickstart switcher built in.  I wonder if this would allow autobooting 2.1 or 3.1 from an A1000.  Pity, I don't own an A1000.  :-(

that would be great, but since KS2+ takes 512Kb instead of 256 it probably needs some modification
Better sorry than worry.

I was thinking on this system also...
but thought as the A500 connector is left handed and the A1000 is Right...the pin configuration would be different?
or would the A590 just be back to front??
Also consider:-
Whats the minimum spec to run a A570...ie Ram and Kickstart?

just the A1000 left! and up for sale...email!

The A570 actually works best with the 1.3OS & needs at least 512Kb worth of RAM.

A2000 GVP 40MHz \'030, 21Mb RAM SD/FF, 2 floppies, internal CD-ROM drive, micromys v3 w/laser mouse
A1000 Microbotics Starboard II w/2Mb 1080, & external floppy (AIRdrive)
C-128 w/1571, 1750, & Final Cartridge III+

Well, it worked!

I had to make a boot disk that assigns the SYS: to the hard disk, but the old girl (A1000) seems not to mind the A590, and runs fine.

Also, I was amazed to see the date was still accurate after all this time sitting packed.

Only thing that went wrong was the A1000's mouse with the angled plug. It is no longer working. I opened the mouse itself and found a fair amount of corrosion had built up inside the circuit board. I tried to clean it, and now I get vertical pointer movement and the buttons work, but no horizontal movement.

Pain in the arse, as the A500 mouse will not fit in the joyport, because the A590 housing is now in the way.

A small detail though. Oh yes, the 2 MB of Ram in the A590 is working as well.

Is it not possible to just use the a1000 mouse cable with that a500 mouse?

I tried to solder the A1000 cable to the A500 mouse board and got nothing at all. This leads me to think that the pins may be different. The A500 mouse works fine on the A1000 without the A590 atatched.

er, you should be careful with mouse pinouts, it uses +5V IIRC..
Better sorry than worry.
