OS4 Release Questions...
« on: February 08, 2006, 09:21:41 PM »
I don't really understand the argument that OS4 needs to wait until new PPC hardware is released. I understand that ideally the OS will run best on new hardware but from what I understand it runs great on the thousands of PPC enabled classic machines. It *was* designed to support the classic machines so what's the deal?

It has to be corporate red tape. So my question is, how do we fix it? We should be able to appeal to the company holding back whether its Hyperion or AInc or whomever. How do we get them to understand that money coming in for classic machines and people who just want to stock up or support the OS can *only* help?!

And for god's sake, everybody has access to some old mac hardware. Add support for them and you have an enourmous base. Makes no freaking sense....

Ahem... sorry for that . :)

Take over the offices Amiga Inc.  Not that they would really be doing anything over there.  Threaten a few people here there everywhere. :ak47:

Yeah, these are the clowns that are causing it.

There are less than 1.000 PowerUP User left.

@DJBase

Is that number based on those who answered the poll at amiga.org who happened to be on when the poll was up or are there nice little actively powered RFID tags on each BPPC/CSPPC that inform the world of the remaining quantity?

Not to be too much of a smartass but seriously are those numbers a guess or based on fact somehow. For exmaple I have a BPPC that I am waiting to use. So that will be one more that's in use and I didn't answer the poll cause I didn't have one at the time.

There is a PowerUP registration running since Dec 2005 and the numbers are far away from 1000 so dont expect more.

Just because only 1000 people answered doesn't mean there's only 1000 boards/users left. My father has 2 boards that he hasn't registered. There have to be other users out there who haven't heard of the survey or just aren't filling it out. Plus it's only been going 2 months. If you want accurate survey data, that's not enough time, especially for one that users need to discover on their own.

And? Do you think even if 1000 users were left that all will buy OS4? Will your dad buy 2 copies because he has 2 cards? He was also talking of thousands. If there are thousands of users left were have they all gone? Why does the software sell doing that bad? Well, we will see if there are much more users outthere in 4 months. I doubt that. The amiga market is very tiny these days.

You can at last get the serial of the BPPC/CSPPC with Scout or WhichAmiga output.

The idea is to have a big rollout when AmigaOS 4 is finally released.  There will be advertizing and everything.  It wouldn't make sense to advertise a system that cannot sell to new users because of no new hardware would it?

As for the Mac, they use custom chipsets made explicitly by Apple for the Macintosh.  To build an OS to support it you'd need reference materials and permission from Apple to do it.  Reverse engineering works for open-source freeware operating systems like AROS because there is no money behind the designers and essentially nobody for Apple to sue.

Who wants to be stuck for the rest of their lives trying to find old machines that may fail at any minute when they can have a brand new machine instead.  I for one am thankful that there are new boards coming out other than the AmigaOne line since that means we may have some reliable machines at last.
