picasso II probs on bootup
« on: February 07, 2006, 03:30:11 PM »
Bought this thing on ebay and plugged it into my A4000 w/CSPPC/060 and os 3.1. I got the software online and did some reading and now it mostly works, but lately when I start it up I get a scrambled screen that I can almost read, although the cursor wraps around the screen and I sort of have to experiment with where it is. The screen tells me intuition is attempting to adjust the screen mode or some such thing and asks me to close all windows etc, but I can't easily locate the cancel or okay buttons because of the scrambled screen. I have tried to hold both buttons down to see if I can change some configuration so it boots to a clean screen, but it's very eratic. In fact, sometimes as I am booting and holding the two buttons down it simply goes to a perfectly fine workbench screen. Maybe I missed the timing or something.

I also find that many programs will not boot up properly or display properly, like Caligari 24. All I get is a plain grey screen, no windows, no nothin'. I reboot and try again with a different program. Could somebody let me know if this is a common occurance? I thought that this board would allow me to run my stuff with a nice big NEC multisync but now I'm wondering if I have to go back to my little C=1960 screen. Any explanations should be phrased in easy to understand details as my tech expertise is pretty much nil. I'm a user, not a technician. I can add boards and run software, but adjustments and such are not intuitive with me, I always end up using default settings. Pitiful I know, but that's me. I can tell you how to fire a multi-chambered Japanese noborigama kiln, though! Need any ceramic sculpture? :-D

Some early starting program is trying to open its own screen before Workbench is loaded. Check your startup-sequence and/or user-startup, perhaps also WBstartup. Which RTG program do you have, CGX 3/4 or P96? Don't say you have the original Picasso software...

Use a program like NewMode to open a Picasso screen if some program tries to open a native Amiga screen.

I have P96. I'll go through the startup. This is one of those Atlantis machines I got and the startup sequence was originally filled with references to the original network it was part of, and software/hardware no longer around. I saved the original file and editted out everything but the basics, I might have missed something.

Now, the cables are set up per some instructions I got: a cable from the Amiga video out goes to the Picasso board and then a cable from the Picasso goes up to the NEC monitor. Is this correct? I didn't get a manual with the card, natch, and if anybody knows of a copy of it or a website with the setup for the board I'd appreciate it.

I was doing so well with my other A4000D, for years doing my CADD business, using a big HP plotter, a 56K dial up modem and a Supergen. Then  I got this fancy box with a Cyberstorm and got excited about running a real hot Miggy. So far it runs much more like my 1989 Volvo 240, with an "I" beam for a rear bumper, a broken hatch and a radio that sometimes comes out to sit on the passenger seat while I beat on it with a stick.

You can put temporarily for the first line of startup-sequence so you can see where the script stops and kicks that intuition message on the screen.

You have the cables correct.  The Amiga video to picasso cable goes in the lower (closest to the A4000 daughterboard) connection and you run a vga cable from the top connector out to your monitor.

If you are using the original harddrive and didn't reformat and reinstall 3.1 or 3.0, make sure there's no previous rtg software on the harddrive.  Go into Devs:monitors/ and using the pulldown menu 'Show all' see if there are other monitor drivers from another rtg file system (like CybergraphX or EGS).  Delete any that aren't p96 related or Amiga system related (i.e. don't delete PicassoII, NTSC, Productivity, DblNTSC, PAL, etc.) Next, go into Prefs: and again 'Show all' so you can see the Envarc: drawer.  Open Envarc and see if there is a drawer named 'EGS', 'CGX', 'Cybergraphx', or 'Village'.  The only rtg drawer that should be in there is 'P96'.  Delete these foreign files and reboot.  If you have just Picasso96 installed you should be all right, provided there's no other rtg system and nothing in s:startup-sequence or s:user-startup to screw things up.  If you could show us what startup-sequence and user-startup look like it would help.  For example, rtg software doesn't like programs like FBlit and BlazeWCP that mess with standard graphics routines.
