AmigaOne or Pegasos II
« on: February 06, 2006, 04:22:59 PM »
I'm thinking about moving on to the next generation of hardware and the Pegasos II looks to be a better buy than the A1 boards.  Will the Peg II run OS4?  All I've seen is fine print that says "AmigaOS compatible" which isn't very reassuring.  Thanks.

Steve

Pegasos doesnt and (probably) never will run AmigaOS. Pegasos runs MorphOS which happens to have AmigaOS API compatibility layer.

Hi,
on the MorphOS side, it's existing OS4emu that can "run" some OS4 software.
in the other side, the AmigaOne G4 is very hard to find because it's no more produced.
You'll have also some rework to do to improve Internal IDE and USB
Some G4 upgrade would be realised soon for A1-XE/XL-G3.
The microAone would be definitively G3...

On both systems, you'll have to use UAE -UniversalAmigaEmulator to run most off apps and games, and you'll need a very powerfull system (G4 - 0.8 Ghz)to emulate the equivalente of a 68040 @ 20 Mhz..

On both systems, you'll have to add a Catweasel MK3 or 4 to read floppy disk (you can not to boot on them).

Finaly the choice is hard, both got loads of specifics apps and linux+SDL ported games/apps.
Go to a party where you'll see both of them. :-)
Keep the Faith !
VG 5000/A1000/500/500+/600/2000/CDTV/1200PPC-GREX/1200PPC -ATEO-BV/4060D/CD32/Aone/Peg 1/Peg2 G4/ various funny machines too  :-) http://www.mo5.com/collection/index.php?pseudo=CLS2086
I also repair drives of our old beloved Amiga

Nah, that's not a good idea to invite such close rivals to a party.  They'll just make a scene.

Aside- My parties only have beer, food, and playmates (except for the playmates).  I must be some kind of loser.
Good good study, day day up!

As of now, you havent much choice since amigaone boards aint avaliable from anywhere but second hand. The AmigaONE is sadly at the moment the only system that runs OS4. The pegasos will probably never run OS4, but runs a OS called MorphOS which has built in emulation for running old os3.x 68k apps.

There are talks about a new OS4 compitable board coming out sometime in the future, which has also pretty much been verified by hyperion which those who are coding OS4. Their website is: http://www.troikang.com/

I personally would wait and see if something comes out of this, unless you can find someone willing to sell you their amigaone.

Check out these forums: For OS4/AmigaONE http://www.amigaworld.net/ and for MorphOS/Pegasos: http://www.morphzone.org/

If the Internet as we know it had existed in 1975, do you think we would have seen threads with the subject "VHS or Betamax?"

According to BBRV in a post here on Amiga.org last year, in a thread regarding a port of OS4 to Cell, he said

Quote

Better to port OS4 to the Pegasos (it is already done!).

As well as the above statement there are many rumours that OS4 has been adapted by certain enterprising Pegasos owners to run on Pegasos II - the point is that we're not allowed to.

But then the OS3.9 EULA specifically prohibits running it on non-Amiga branded hardware, yet thousands of UAE users are running it quite happily on their PC's.  And OS X is not licensed to be run on anything except Apple Macs, but that doesn't stop people (including AmigaOne owners) from running it on their machines under MOL.

IMO if you spend your money to purchase a copy of OS4 and want to run it on your Pegasos II, and you have the knowledge and time to make it happen, or you know someone who does, that's your prerogative.

@ferrellsl

IMHO, you should assume that AmigaOne runs Amiga OS 4 and Pegasos II runs MorphOS.

If you have time to wait, I would suggest you check out both and decide which suits your needs.

For OS4/AmigaOne information: http://www.amigaworld.net/
For MorphOS/Pegasos information: http://www.morphzone.org/

At the moment, it is difficult to find AmigaOne hardware.

Stay tuned for more news about Amy '05 by Troika NG and PowerVixxen LT by ACK Software Controls.

For Amy '05 see http://www.troikang.com/
Some news about PowerVixxen http://safir.amigaos.se/article_ack_eng.html

I own a micro AmigaOne (µA1-C), onwhich I am running Amiga OS 4.0 pre-release update #3.  I'm not a beta tester, just a user.  I've had a chance to try out some new programs, as well as tinker with my old applications and E-UAE.

And the AmigaONE isn't a real amiga either. Not in my opinion anyway.
