A2000 - making very hot GARY ...
« on: February 06, 2006, 10:51:04 AM »
Hi,
Since my A2000 stoped to worked last year I didn't toucht it.
So yesterday evening I tried to investigate it.

My A2000-C (PAL/50) was damaged in the "postal" transport.
It was equiped with a rev 6.3 ECS (no more mouse port and no more RVB output...).
So I took on ebay a rev 4.5 OCS PAL 50 Hz (1 Mb of Chip version) that worked, and I tried to exchanged all chips with the one on the 6.3 and...
it's worked well !
And I got 'natively' 60 Hz RGB output, but 512 kb of chip and FAST, no easy way to get 1 Mb so I leave that untouched.

I put in a GVP Series 1 HC8+ v2 "Proto" (that's what is written on the WD SCSI chip) with a little 80 Mb Scsi-1 drive. I put a Toshiba 4x Cdrom Scsi-2 drive and it was detected.
So I changed the "slow" 80 Mb for a 2Gb Scsi-2 which was slow too  :-o , but the Cdrom was no more detected....  :getmad:

So I put an Alfa DATA IDE + Panasonic adaptator, I plugged a 24x  Cdrom on the IDE port and I worked well and fast at 3.4 MB/s with IDEFIX/97!

So I put a 2630 (4Mb) + FPU  + rom v7, that worked well.
Then I put a VLAB Y/C (PAL) that worked well with VHI.

I installed well OS 3.9 and tons of softwares... I worked well around 10 hours, but only 512 kb of chip is very annoying !!!

Then I tried to put a CV64/3D+ which was well recognised in the kickstart menu, I installed CGX v4, and tried to configured it... but no way... always my VGA screen remains OFF (LG 56i and it works well with my BVision, AGA in VGA mode, Voodoo3 PCI on 1200, Voodoo 5 PCI and AGP on Pegasus,....), even ata CGX bootpicture.

Suddenly, its reboots but no more life sight.
Only a black output screen.
So I tooked off all cards and extensions, disconnect floppy and CDROM.
It still remains black, and time to time green lines.

Yesterday, I took the time to investigate that.
I found that after 1min, GARY was going too much HOT.
So I took it off.
I examined it and saw at its oposide side that I had turned to grey  :madashell: .
I took another one in spare parts,
Turn the machine on,
no more luck,
I still got black screen.

Turn it off,
push down firmly all chips,
turn it on,
and then,
there was a grey screen with black stripes turned fast on RGB output....   :-?

Turn it off, put the old kick 2.04, then turn it on.
No more luck,
black screen again and time to time green lines.

But the "new" GARY remains excessively hot ...

Any idea ?
Does someone got a 6.3+ 60 Hz mobo to sold ?
Keep the Faith !
