A3000 ZIP RAM
« on: February 01, 2006, 02:27:48 PM »
I checked my A3000 which ZIP RAM it has. On the chips I can read: NEC D424400V-70. Are they 256kx4 or 1mx4? Googled, but did not find this information.

That's probably one reason why I wouldn't be able to have an Amiga 3000, the hunt for zip ram.  It's bad enoughI have to find some more Zip Ram for my Two Apple IIgs's and my Apple IIc. Err, 24 of them and 16 more to find.  I just love vintage computer products.

Yeah - I'm still looking for the 4th bank of static columns to replace the current fast page ones. You can get them from Softhut, but they're $32 a 4 MB set.
That's $4,000 for 'standard' 512 MB.

Use SIMM's instead, even though these old SIMM's might be quite difficult to get now (and rather expensive too) it's still better than trying to get ZIP's.

You'll need to build one of these but it's not that hard.

Not that hard?  I tried... and gave up.  :)  I couldn't find anyone that would actually print the board for me... and I didn't want to make all those etchings by hand.

Maybe I'll do it some day.

I think someone like elbox of amigakit should make a nice big run of zip2sim boards.  They'd sell 100 I bet.

If you want to make boards at home, you can try a toner transfer method.  Use laser print or photocopy onto transparency or some common photopapers, and iron onto a copper clad board.  The toner acts as an etchant mask.  Don't have to bother with photoresist, light boxes, etc.  It's not the most precise method, but it does work, and cuts some of the hardware costs.  After having trouble with noise on breadboard circuits, I do all my prototyping this way.  It is possible, though tricky, to do double sided boards, enabling one to use a handy ground plane.  Most beneficial.
