Trying to bring back 'the good old times'!
« on: January 31, 2006, 06:41:37 PM »
Hi all!

Well after about 16yrs I decided to get my Amiga 500 Plus out of the loft after reminiscing with some friends.
Much to my disappointment it has a fault!
When the power is switched on the green LED on the Amiga flashes 10 times equally then 1 time slightly longer, and then continues to cycle in the same way. I have stripped the computer down and found that the 3.6V battery was corroded. I have replaced this but the fault is still present.
Can anybody please save me?
Thanks for your time. :-)

Make sure the battery acid hasn't damaged some of the tracks on the mobo...

Welcome to A.Org!

And good luck with repairing your Amiga... If you're unsuccessful, there are plenty of cheap A500s on eBay to get you re-started!

The Amiga can operate without the battery; a new one won't help if the old one has damaged the motherboard. The Amiga Technical Resource (http://amiga.serveftp.net) has some good guides on repairing battery damage. If you're not up for fixing it yourself, there's a place in France that does excellent work on repairing Amiga motherboards. I haven't used them personally, but several members here on A.Org have nothing but praise for them.

EDIT: There's also a chance that your problems aren't due to battery damage at all. Make sure all chips are securely socketed and the pins are making contact.

Hi Twanger!

That green screen usually means an error with the Chip RAM or Fat Agnus.

Open the case, and try pressing down on all of the socketed chips, especially the big square one (Fat Agnus, which is associated with the Chip RAM).  Don't push too hard, the idea is just to make sure things are well seated and hopefully "reorient" the pins to get a slightly better connection.

If you're confident doing it, removing the chips one at a time and reseating them (cleaning pins as you go) might be required.

Good luck!

Hi

The battery leakage hasn't damaged the mobo... I've taken out every chip that's in a socket on the board and cleaned the legs of the chips and the sockets. I've made sure the chips are correctly inserted the right way and are seated correctly. I'm affraid the fault is still there. :-?

I thought that this sequence of flashing of the power LED maybe is an error code?

Did you try reseating all the chips? Hey if you cant get it working, try putting it on ebay as such, i remember recently here a guy put up for sale some videocards which were either broken or didnt work quite right, and he made some money.

Dont feel bad for doing this, be honest about the condition of the hardware like that guy did. Lots of people will buy non fuctional hardware for a good price because they know there is a good chance they can fix it. I bid on a vid card that guy said he broke after he scratched the board. ( i lost the bid though ): )

Yeah, I re-seated every chip possible. Guess I'll get another off ebay and keep my faulty 500 for spares...
