Best system for Amiga Emulation
« on: January 31, 2006, 02:24:27 AM »
Whats the best system for running a emulated amiga, as far as best im talking speed/compatiblity and of course were talking Windows_VS_Linux_VS_OSX and dont forget too toss in Intel_AMD_G4/G5 (wondering if AMD64's are better, dualcores?, anyone?)

WinUAE is the most complete emulator there is. Even UAE itself, afaik, is nowhere near as complete. Thus, PC/Windoze is your best option.

Packages based on WinUAE, I'm not gonna touch that one.

A 64 bit CPU, as of right now, will not help things run smoother... Since WinUAE is a 32bit program. But, the faster your system, the better your emulation performance will be.

A4000D, A3640 OC-36.3MHz, custom tower, Mediator A4000D. Diamond Banshee 16M, Indivision AGA 4000, GVP HC+8.

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

 - Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. :D -

yea thats what i figured, just wasnt sure the current state of the OSX emulation

Now i guess the only other question is Intel or AMD (some stuff seems to run better on one then the other so what about emulation anyone ?)

I would go with an AMD Athlon with 512+megs of ram, 256 videocard.  Like the other member mentioned the faster the system the better.

AMD all the way... "Faster, cheaper, and much much safer." - Gotcha

I believe the uae for OSX is basicly the same as the one on linux, which is e-uae. They work fine, but lacks a few features compared to the winuae.

If all you are going to do with the system is run Amiga emulation the fastest AMD system you can build or buy is your best bet and run WinUAE, AmigaForever.  But if you are going to use the computer for other things (besides games), I would not recommend a Windows box, go with OSX on the Mac, you won't regret it.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

Get a new Intel Mac. You can run Windows for WinUAE to get the best Amiga emulation possible, and also boot OSX when you want to use a real operating system for everything else :-)

@motorollin
no, those intel macs will not easily run windows. it was discussed on slashdot. just because they have same CPU doesn't mean they can run same software because of drivers, different architecture.. etc for eg. those macs don't have bios.
there is some contest to run win and many mac users have 'brickified' their macs

its probably not impossible in future to run other os on it but the drivers are gonna be a problem.

Better sorry than worry.

The original UAE is no longer in the picture as such. WinUAE is now the most advanced, but if you run anything but Windows the option is to use Richard Drummond's E-UAE.

I wouldnt say that.... You know the linux and netbsd folks will do what ever it takes to get their platform running on that hardware. linux ppc on mac is very well supported right now.

We will most likely see linux on the new macs first. I think it would be in microsofts best interest to support the intel mac on their new release of windows. I would buy a copy of windows and dual boot osx on an intel mac.
