My QUICKPAK 4000T PSU BLEW UP! Please HELP!

Hello Amiga experts!

  My PSU in my QUICKPAK AMIGA TECH. 4000T Blew up on me! Can I use a standard PC AT PSU to replace it? Please let me know I'm dying.

If it's any consolation, the PSU on my
brother's PC recently blew, and the mobo/etc
wasn't harmed at all.

 I had a Cyberstorm inside that I tested with a stock 3000T - I got a ROM screen so , looks like its ok... knock on wood.

There was a hack on Aminet in hard/hack that explained this, but a quick search couldn't locate it for me. I did find atx_psu.lha in the same directory, so maybe that could be the go.

I'll check my own filebase tonight and see if I have the AT version available.

Just logged on to my own BBS from here and can't find an AT version at all.

I've used an XT PSU on both an A500 and A1200, so I know it's possible to do the same with an AT unit.

Sorry to hear about your power supply.

It's a relatively simple exercise to get either an ATX or preferably an AT power supply working with the QP A4000T.
I can write you some instructions of how to go about it.

BTW, you still owe me a 16Mb and 4Mb SIMM (or US$50) from 25th November 2000.
Care to make an exchange?

On the plus side, the Cyberstorm 060 you sold me is still going well, I use it every day.

 Glad to hear the Cyberstorm is working I had sent you the 16mb of RAM, you never got it? I will send you some more.. I have a couple of SIMMS that are probably higher - maybe 32mb. I dont need them. Email me your address and I'll get them out. Also, send me the info on the PSU.

Uh, the QP A4000T PSU's ARE AT PSUs.  It should be a direct swap.  This is because QuickPak used AT cases for the A4000T.  If you open the front door and look at the three buttons, notice the far right (speaker on/off) button is labled Turbo.  See?    The only thing you may have to mess with is the power switch wiring, but that depends on your replacement PSU--if it has a push button switch connected or not.  If not, simply unsolder the switch from the origonal PSU and solder it to the new one.  

Pair the switch wires like this

Black      White
Brown    Blue

 I consulted some techs and yes, you are correct Standard PC AT Power Supplies work! I'm going down to the PC shop and getting one! That sure is nice. The 4000T is a nice machine..

 HOw did you clock up to 72mhz? Ihave a Cyberstorm PPC and am afraid to overclock it..

The QuickPak 060 is a fantastic accelerator, and is the ONLY Amiga accelerator that actually takes advantage of EDO memory.  It's designed to run up to 66MHz but I own a 68060RC50A rev 5 CPU that is known to overclock very well so I replaced the oscillator with a 36MHz part to obtain a 72MHz bus clock speed.  100% stable and cool to the touch.  Not one chip on the whole accelerator gets hotter then warm.

If I had 50ns RAM, I could probably do 80MHz.

Still, at 72MHz it has been running for months without a single reboot or crash.

On the other hand, I also have an A3000T/060 that I use with a Video Toaster 4000.  It has a CyberStorm MKII 060 @50MHz w/CyberSCSI.  Even with the CyberSCSI removed  I can not get a stable overclock to even 66MHz.  I've tried the CPU from my Quickpak with the same results so something on the MKII is limiting the overclock.  The AMD MACH GAL's get almost too hot to touch at 66MHz and the accelerator causes lockups frequently when overclocked.  Perhaps with some small heatsinks and a good fan I could keep it stable, but who cares?  I do all my lightwave rendering on the A4000T and use the A3000T for video switching, so the 3000T does not need to be any faster then it already is.  

Anyway, the Quickpak 060 ROCKS and I highly recommend it to anyone.  They _will_ work (and fit) in an A3000T, I have tried it myself.
