Found an Amiga 500 but trashed it...
« on: January 28, 2006, 10:25:25 PM »
Hi, this is my first post here but here it goes:
Me and a friend of mine went to the local electornics waste dumpster to trash some old hairdryer. But while there I found an Amiga 500 (i think). I asked my friend if I would take it but he was like, it's old trash. I coudn't find any ac-adaptor for it so I was like "who cares" and I smashed it right down on the ground (not every day you do that with an amiga, dont you?). I took the processor (6800) and then we went. But later on I regreted it and now my question is if an Amiga 500 is worth something or if its just trash (dunno if it worked at all). I haven't owned an Amiga so thats why I'm asking. I heard that theres a lot of great games on it and of course mod music. :-D

GNnnnnnn....Burn the heretic!

Anyhow, A500s are not worth much. Not the cash kind of worth.

If you were to trash an A3000T, A4000T, CDTV or even an A3000+ I'd personally come round and kill you though :p.

haha, thats great, i used to love smashing computers. Yea, the a500 isnt worth much... Ive got an old a1000 that doesnt work anymore, ive been thinking of taking it out, dousing it was gasoline and lighting it on fire. I'll take a video of it, and put it up on the net.

I was filled with rage too. :-x

But one thing I don't understand - if "lol" means "laughing out loud", how could you be laughing out loud at the same time as being filled with rage?

That sounds similar to when Homer Simpson said he wanted to "vomit in terror" or when Marge said "I'm very disappointed and terrified". ;-)

@koaftder:

Don't kill an innocent old A1000! Even if it doesn't work, stick it on eBay and someone will buy it, giving you a few $$ and someone else some fun repairing it!

I made the mistake as a kid of trashing a few Commodore calculators (bought for next to nothing at a second hand sale in the early '80s) and I really wish I'd kept them now!

An A 500 may not be worth much, but it's still an interesting piece for an enthusiast. It's possible to build a custom IDE interface and connect an IDE harddisk, connect a CPU Upgrade (68020 or 68030) through CPU slot, or increase the chip ram to 2mb with some modification. Quite fun !

I believe you are troll, but i will reply anyways.

A stock a500 might not be worth much cash, but you can still get anywhere from $20-$60 on ebay and similar for it depending on condition and where you are located.

It runs thousands of games, and you can indeed make great mods with it, so indeed you can have a quite a bit fun with such a cheap machine.

I ask again.. What the he*l are you doing on a amiga forum, when you have openly said that you think both the Amiga hardware and software is a piece of crap. You seem like a bigger troll than the orginal poster of this thread.

I guess you also paid loads for your amiga hardware, just to make impressive videos about you burning them?

Hi,
for the A500, you don't need the special PSU, you can easily power it with the floppy connector using and old PC AT PSU (or an ATX if you can put 2 wires  :rtfm: ).
A500 is easy to repair. I repared 5 out of 6, and around 8 drives out of 10...
A1000 is bit more complicated, you'll have to buy a electrical desoxyder spray and a teeth brush to clean every circuit and connectors  ;-) . This is why I paid mine 42 Euros..  :-D and it works like a charm. You can also adapt an ITX PSU if it's needed.
Keep the Faith !

I also repair drives of our old beloved Amiga

cmon, just because i would cram an a1000 chock full of thermite and light it off for amiga enthusiast viewing pleasure doesnt make me a troll.

Ive got a spare a1000 that ive been raping for parts for a while now, to keep the other one up and going. Ive repaired my a3000, posted up pix, wrote a description, etc.

Where did i say, "Amiga hardware is crap", "Amiga software is crap" ? Ive had a lot of fun fixing my crap, and playing old games. Thats the value it has for me.

If you asked me my opinion about the proposed new amiga hardware, id say it's under speced, and over priced. Because... Well, it is. And for aos4, yup, it's obsolete 4 years before it hasnt been released yet, because well, it is.

But, i'm going to burn the amiga. I'll do a short film about it. I'll call it "To Kill an Amiga". It will be about an amiga 1000, whos married to a 486dx2_66pc running windows 95. The amiga gets caught having a lesbian love afair with an sgi indigo 2 with 200MHz r4400 with 512mb parity ram running irix 6.2. The pc catches them behind the shed, their cases are off, and they are talking hot dirty nasty tcp together and interfacing their scsi ports. Raw 50pin banging, straight to the board from the back side!.

Mr 486 takes his can of home made napalm and sprays them with it and lights them on fire, camera watches them burn for a while, then fades to black.
