Amiga PC Network

Since my floppy drives died a death I've decided to network my A1200 to my Windows 2000 PC. I bought a 3COM network card and a LAN cable from ebay. This also came with software for both the Amiga and PC. I've plugged the card into the A1200 and inserted the LAN cable into the port on the back of the PC.

I've run AmiTCP on the Amiga, installed the driver from Aminet and run the program PCMCIA driver. The little light at the end of the cable where it meets the card has now lit up. On the PC side I've run a program called BabyFTP... and now I'm stuck. How do I get the two machines to recognise eachother and then transfer files?

If my googling is correct, then Baby FTP is an FTP server for Windows. So you then need an FTP client for your Amiga so you can connect to the server at the Windows end and transfer files.

Thanks for the reply. I've got a program called AmiFTP which loads fine. Once it's running though it doesn't seem to do much.

You have to connect it to the FTP server. The server name will be the IP address of your PC.

In AmiFTP the only options I have are to enter the name of a site or local drawer. Nothing seems to be happening when I enter my IP address.

have you tried ping-ing the machines? BTW, I'd suggest smbfs its probably a bit slower but much more comfortable.

i have had good experience with using Serv-u FTP and AMIFTP 1.8 which is free on there website now

i did download a version that wouldnt work for me, is the latest version on aminet or is it an earlier version?

make sure you get the ip address correct and disable a firewall if it is running on the windows machine (just for testing)

Go to the Amiga and try to ping the IP address of the PC. Once you get a reply from the PC you know the connection works. Then make sure you put the IP address of the PC as the site address in AmiFTP.

I'm using AmiFTP 1.843. I can't transfer files to the Amiga the way I used to with 720k MSDOS disks as the floppies have stopped working. So I'm kind of stuck with what I've got at the moment.

This is a stupid question but where do I ping the PC from on the Amiga? In MSDOS it's a command but it's not a recognised Amigados command.

Are you able to connect to the Internet with your Amiga?

I use Miami and SimpleFTP which works great. I am not familiar with AmiTCP.

I run IIS on a PC that hosts an internal FTP site. Ensure you configure user name and password correctly, and open Port 21 on the Firewall on the PC (for the internal LAN), if it is in use.

To keep things simple I run my network behind a router, and assign the FTP server a static IP address.

If you have a Null Modem cable a simple solution to get started is available at:WarTrans.

It uses an Amiga Basic script to set up transfers with a PC.
I used it when my Amiga hardrive died once, and I had no way to get files onto my new drive.

Not very fast, but a snap to set up.

It's in italian, but you can see setting for AmiTCP and MiamiDX.
With this guide you could share your machines and share your file

Simply:
You have to set Windows like a Server (ip 192.168.0.1),
while Amiga have to set like a Client (ip 192.168.0.2,
subnetmask 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1 and DNS
192.168.0.1, mtu 1500)

With this italian guide you share internet connection and file in few seconds

oh, i'd like to add that to share Windows directory is better to use Samba

Without samba, you can share file via irc session or via ftp

i use amitradecenter (www.amitradecenter.net) and
cerberus ftp (www.cerberusftp.com) server for windows. works very good!
