A3000 clean install of OS3.9 - help!
« on: January 23, 2006, 08:10:57 AM »
Hi,

I bought OS3.9 from AmigaKit over a year ago and have only just got round to installing it (mainly because didn't want to change my existing Amiga setup at the time).

I've just installed a "new" (!) 1Gb hard drive into my A3000, so thought I'd have a go at installing OS3.9 from scratch as previous WB installations have been a doddle. Oh dear!

My A3000's specs are: A3000D, Cyberstorm Mk2 '060 with 128Mb RAM, Cybervision 64, Catweasel MK2. Internal SCSI hard drive, external SCSI CD-ROM.

I've basically installed a standard 3.1 Workbench so that I can have something to boot into. I've done this from the original floppies, with the exception of altering a copy of the installation disk to include replacement 68040.library and 68060.library files in LIBS:. After installation, I made sure that these replacements were also in the hard drive's LIBS: directory.

I then modified the "CD0" icon's tooltypes to point to the right SCSI ID for my CD drive and then mounted it. So far, so good... I can mount the OS3.9 installation disk and see the files on it.

I then double-clicked on the "AmigaOS3.9" CD icon, followed by the "OS-VERSION3.9" drawer, and finally the "OS3.9-INSTALLATION" icon. The CD was read for a while, but then the installation stopped with a Guru for "c/Installer" with error #8000000B.

OK... Not what I wanted but I figured it requires a newer version of "Installer", so I copied the version from the CD's "EMERGENCY-BOOT/C" directory to my "C:" assign. This is version 44.10.

I then rebooted and tried the above again. The same error occurred for "c/Installer".

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening?

Thanks in advance,

 - Ali

Dodgy disc? Why not try copying the contents to a drawer on your hard drive and try running the installer from there?

If it's c/installer rather than c:installer, it might be the version of installer that's on the disc causing problems.  Try using the standard 3.1 version from your install discs.  Change the tool associated with the 3.9 install icon, or start it from a CLI.

Have you installed all the setpatches necessary for the 060 in your startup-sequence or user startup?  I don't know if any patching is necessary, but you might want to check it out.

I don't know that this'll work, but it might get you a bit further...

Good luck!

As obviously all files on the CD appear to be upper case, you will fail to install OS3.9 correctly anyway, no matter if the Installer runs or not. So you should try to update your CD-ROM driver first. Search the CD for a file called CacheCDFS and copy it to the L directory of your boot partition. Now edit the CD0 file and change the line reading

FileSystem = L:CDFileSystem

into

FileSystem = L:CacheCDFS

then reboot. Now the files on the CD should appear in mixed case (i.e. "OS-Version" rather than "OS-VERSION" etc.)

After that, try to run the installer again. Perhaps it does not crash any more.

Bye,
Thomas

Hi,

Thanks everyone for the info and suggestions... It appears my CD-ROM drive has had it... Either that, or I have some sort of weird SCSI termination problem...

Basically, every file I try and run from the CD results in a "Program failed" error for that particular file.

The drive is an old Apple 600 quad speed, so I guess it needs replacing.

I'll bear the points of CDFileSystem vs CacheCDFS in mind when I next get a chance to install - thanks for the info.

Need sleep now! The Amiga can wait until tomorrow!

Hi,

Seems my A3000 doesn't like SCSI CD-ROM drives, or at least the two I have!

Gave up in the end, took the hard drive out, connected it to a PC and copied the OS3.9 files across to it from WinUAE...

Oh well!!!

Just a note that you should always install after booting from the Emergency floppy.  Otherwise, you'll find that some files are not copied/replaced correctly on SYS:.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

Hi,

Thanks for the info - had done that though, after reading similar comments elsewhere. Just had to make an assign for AmigaOS3.9: to the files on the hard drive, added that to the emergency floppy's Startup-Sequence and all was fine.

@InTheSand:

Termination issues or something else? Search for "A3000" on this page.

Also keep in mind that if you attach both internal and external devices, there should be no termination on the motherboard. This because the scsi-controller will then be in the middle of scsi-chain and only the beginning and end of the scsi-chain should be terminated - which in that case should be the last internal device and the last external device.

If you use external device every now and then, but not always, a simple solution is to never have any termination on the motherboard, putting an external DB25 terminator in the external scsi-connector of the A3000 when no external unit is connected.

@Patrik - looks like I'll have to check my SCSI chip's revision. I've had the A3000's case off too many times today though, so it can wait for now!

Not sure if it's termination or not... I've tried a variety of combinations. My A3000 doesn't have any internal termination resistors, but fails to read properly from the CD drive regardless of whether it's plugged into the internal ribbon cable or external port.

Hey Ali, I recently installed 3.5 on my A3000D, and things changed a lot, from trying to install 3.1 from floppy which didn't really work.

I don't know about 3.9, but the 3.5 CD has an installer for OS3.1 which installed it flawlessly, and then it was no problem to then install 3.5 from the same CD.

So try re-installing 3.1 again from CD, and go from there.
Amiga 3000D UP and running! Hear that clicking. 8)
Amiga 3000D & 4000D in storage sadly.

i install 3,9 in my a3000d from ''scratch'' two months ago in a 4,3gb hd, i've just take care of the cd file system situation before that and everything wend just fine. i belive that is a matter of termination or scsi id your problem. in the past on the a1200 i did not have any prob with both 3,5 and 3,9
