Problems with 3com PCMCIA network card
« on: January 21, 2006, 02:29:57 PM »
I've just bought a 3Com network card for my A1200 I found in the loft.  The computer works fine and I have transferred files using Amiga Explorer fine.

I have installed the software that came with the card (cardreset and cardpatch) along with the 3c589 device driver.  I have also installed Miami network program on the Amiga.

When I try and setup the card to access my network, I try and set the device to networks/3c589.device as per the Miami instructions, but I get an error message saying the device can not be found and that the device may be in use.

What have I done wrong ?

Comes up as unknown in PrepCard.  Does this mean it's knackered or is it a driver not installed properly ?

Ive put C:cardpatch in my s:startup-sequence and c:cardreset in s:user-startup

you need to put
C:CardPatch
C:CardReset TICKS 50

at the begining of your startup sequence

not in user-startup

Is pccard.library installed in LIBS:? Also, try running modemtest from Aminet to see if the card is OK.

OK.  I've completely reinstalled the OS on the Amiga and started again.

I have put cardpatch and cardreset in C.  I have installed 3c589 using the installer.  I have also installed pccard.library using the installer.

Reboot.  PrepCard still reports Unknown card.

I have several A1200's running with the 3C589. However I use AmiTCP as TCP-stack. No problems whatsoever. I do not use Cardpatch nor Cardreset.

Hi,

Hate to point to 'the usual suspect' but I had problems with Miami not recognising my 3c589 when I had a power shortage.  Are you running other devices, for example a hard drive and/or accelerator?
If it is a pwer issue you may find you have the same problem with your serial port also.

May be something else entirely, but this is the problem I had.

PS - The only thing I installed (above os3.9) was the 3c589 installation package, which you've already got.  This installs the driver in devs:networks, so yes - you are right to put networks/3c589.device into miami.

EDIT<<<>>>
-my mistake, it is required.

Prepcard will NOT recognise this card - the prepcard utility is only for installing memory cards into the pcmcia, and configuring them.
All you need to do is point miami to the driver - no extra utilities, no extra libraries.

Try disconnecting something power hungry (eg accelerator) and see if miami picks it up then.  IF you can, try the card on a laptop aswell to make sure you are not wasting your time.

Good luck.
Mac Mini G4 (1.5GHz, 64MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.6
Powerbook 5.8 (15", 1.67GHz, 128MB VRam, 1GB Ram): MorphOS 3.8.

Windows-free since 2011-2014 (Damn you Netflix!)

OK.  Plugged the card into my laptop and it works fine. I've also wiped my HD and reinstalled the WB disks.  My serial port works fine becuase I can transfer files from my PC to my A1200 using Amiga Explorer.

I'll install Miami and remove the Blizzard card from the trapdoor and see what happens.

You sure that you are inserting the card all the way? When I first started using PCMCIA cards on the Amiga I didnt realise how much force you needed to push them home.

I would rather not buy anything as I know this works with freely available software.  And I know the card is not configured properly because the green light does not come on at all.

The card is instered correctly because PrepCard changes from No Card Inserted to Unrecognised when I put it in.
