What do you advise for zip files?
« on: April 12, 2003, 12:48:49 AM »
What would you advise for zip files?
I've survived well with Lha only but now I have  these big zip archives I want to open, and don't want to bother having to continue to rearchive every zip file in Lha format.

I used the unpacker tool included with OS3.9 (XAD).
You can download additional decrunch modules form the Aminet.

Hi. Yeah sure, I know. But they're way too many.  I'd like to know general opinions on compatibility and general use. There seem to be some archivers  that are not very compatible with winzip files.

on the amiga side, you should use UnZip - on aminet - i've used it for a couple years now with many zips from PC transfers, no problems yet.

on the PC side, use UltimateZip - it's free, and can make/unlha .lha archives as well as zips, great program. . I've transfered lha's from/to amigas and made them/unarchived them with UltimateZip no problemo. . .

Yeah, but Unzip doesn't support multidisk spanning...
Will have to check Aminet when I have more time.

I could be wrong, but I think you're going to have a tough time finding multidisk support for the Amiga. My A4000 system hard drive device is DH0 while my A1200 device is HD0. Some people name their boot drive "System" while others label it "Workbench". An unpacker wouldn't be able to find the right device half the time and would fail to extract the files, unless its unpacking on the system that created the archive. You could always relabel your drives temporarily, assuming the unzipper gives a decent error message telling you what device name it's looking for. The PC side is easier for multidisk support because drives are labeled C, D, etc.

Anyway, I use Un/ZipPPC on the Amiga. It's at least in the ballpark with Winzip on speed, and I haven't hit an archive it won't unpack yet.
I sold my Amiga for a small fortune, but a part of my soul went with it.
