Problems whit games on an A1200
« on: January 18, 2006, 06:53:12 PM »
I have buyed me an A1200 to play and store games. Now i wanted to play some games on the A1200 and some games are not running. Like Turrican and Slikworm. Some wont start, some start til the intro.

Some other games wil run fine. I also tried an AGA game and that one wont also not start.

So is there somethink whit tha amiga? Os 3.0 runs fine. There is no Extention installed, only a 850meg harddisk. Aslo tryed whitout harddisk.

What is the problem???

a lot of old games that has writen for the a500 ocs graphics chip and the 68000 cpu don't run on the a1200 if you don't make a fiew tricks while the a1200 boots up. right after you power on the amiga hold and keep both the 2 mouse buttons, and at the screen that will appear change the display options to original, after that in the boot options check the ''disable cpu caches '' and restart the amiga. you can try these sets together or one by one and see how/and if the games work. how much free ram you have after a normal boot? maybe and this has something to do in a second level...

If i am going to have bugs on my system,
at least let me keep the latest versions.

Can i enable and disable this function? I also want store the games on the harddisk whit WHDload. Is that than a problem? On the A600 all games run fine. Strange is that the cardgame that is written for the AGA chip is also not running. That's the only AGA game i have.

I wil try this to nigth.

I have 1.2 meg free.

As far as i know the ocs can't turn back to aga without reboot. If you boot with aga yes you can use ''killaga''
commands from the shell (if you have any in your c: directory, if not, you can search at aminet for this. With some shell commands you can turn on and of the cache of the cpu after the boot. I never use the WHDload and i don't know how it works but if you have a setup that runs ok on the a600 go and copy it to the a1200! probably will work. As for the aga game, maybe  it needs ram... try to find at least a ram expansion or even better a 68030 accelarator to gain more cpu power together with more ram

Just tryd it and it works for the most games. That cache turnoff. But not on Turrican 1. Even the Original or enhanced chipset wont work (at original it sais that i need more ram).

Xenon II and Slikworm are running now. I get an 8 Meg extention about a couple of days.

Geeee i like that 8-bit electronic sound (Xenon II intro just runs)......

Strange thing is that Turrican wil run whit cache off but that the images are weired. Like twisted. Don't know how to discribe... cant see a thing, all colors are mixed up.

run snoopdos (from aminet too) before any program or game to find why the other games don't run. it will report what is the game/program load at run time and maybe this way you will discover what is not going well. files, assigns that are missing etc. (don't work always but helps a lot quiet enough times)

Snoopdos is an excellent idea for tracking down problems with programs running in a Workbench environment. Not sure how useful it will be for running floppy-based games though!

games and a1200???

the BEST solution by far:

a 030 accelerator with 8+ MB FAST RAM
OS 3.1+ (3.9 preffered)
HD 4+ GB
register WHDLOAD

then you will be able to play games with ease , no floppies, no loading times etc...
all other ways just are not worth the time/effort, this is 2006 and whdload is here...

You need to use the WHDload version with many older games. Some do work from floppy if you softkick it to 1.3. But since you already have a hard drive, then the best option is WHDload.

I had that configuration except the HD was 2GB - '030 @ 40Mhz - 16Mb; and while it was good to see my A1200 run older games properly and boot them from HD, you still have to hope there is a patch specific to the game you want to run and that your disks are compatable with the patch (no cracked copies), buying Amiga originals is not only expensive in many cases, but also very difficult to find in 2006.  Having been there and done that I can strongly suggest...

the BEST solution by far:

WinUAE

simple.

I download most WhdLoad games from http://www.deadwoodinc.net/killergorilla
on my A1240/50 AGA/Os3.9, and all games work fine.
On 20Gb HD I have about 2 Gb of old amiga games.
WhdLoad work suberb, only sometimes you must set tooltype for non working games. (nommu, nocache, etc).
And the best thing is you can quit all games with * or F10 and  back to wb.

Hello Roman78,

Try a program called Relokick, which was made by Commodore
in secret and put on CU Amiga magazine in early 1993.It loads the 1.3 Kickstart rom into memory and works with most OCS/ECS games and demo's.
If you would like copy of Relokick email me at But for Turrican 1 it won't work on AGA machine as I have the same problem on my A4000T.You can only run it on emulation or old OCS/ECS Amiga.
Its my all time favorite Amiga game too.
Regards Merv

I think some Polish coder/cracker did it - is that rom file legal?

:-D LOL! Consider me booted, however I've tried both methods and have formed an -informed- opinion.

For simplicity, reliability, compatability, value and versatility WinUAE wins easily by a frikken landslide!!!

For those who -want- to spend their money and time tracking down a mouldy old legit copy of a game, and then spend some more time looking for the WHD patch, and then some cash on regestering WHDload so they can play 15 year old games without a stupid timed spash screen, and then spend some more time installing the game on their HD only to find that floppy #8 is horribly corrupted, WHD wins.

...and I didnt even mention, WHDload bugs & limitations, having to mess around with Tooltypes, PAL/NTSC issues, unsupported-hardware issues, bah!

enjoy.  :-P
