A1200 HDD light stays on, any ideas?
« on: January 16, 2006, 04:03:22 PM »
Standard A1200/KS3.0/WB3.0.

I have SFS installed with 2 partitions (2GB and 1GB) on a Maxtor 40GB set to Master.
CDROM drive on Slave - both drives are on a 40-pin cable.
No CDROM drivers installed.

When I boot into WB the HDD light stays on with the CDROM connected, my HDD partitions are validated.
With the Samsung CDROM drive the light will go out after a few minutes, the LG 16xDVD/CDRW I have connected now doesn't seem to want to let the light go out.
If I unplug the CDROM the HDD light behaves as normal.

Anyone have an idea of why this is happening or what I can do to stop it?

Thanks all.

Hi Phonic

As you'll probably already know, the HDD light will remain on if one of your partitions is invalidated - the OS will attempt to repair the damage to your filesystem.

It may well be that your system recognises that a new IDE device is fitted (check in HDToolBox), but the fact that OS3.0 doesn't have CD ROM support as standard may be causing a problem - I suspect your OS is trying to interrogate the CD ROM and possibly reorganise it, not knowing that it's a read only device (RW not withstanding - that will require an additional driver).

You could try and get hold of an IDE CD ROM utility on the Aminet or upgrade your OS to 3.1

Is the LG drive *definitely* set to slave? I have had situations where a master/slave conflict has occurred, but one of the drives has worked.

That's normal. Unsupported drives do that. Install CD-ROM drivers and the LED will return to normal as soon as the drivers are activated.
