Apollo 1260/66 problems (1240/40 also...)
« on: April 11, 2003, 12:02:01 PM »
I've got 2 Apollo 1240/40 and 1 Apollo 1260/66 and 1 scsi-ii controller (let's say I am a fan of Apollo cards ;).

One 1240 works fine, but the second and the 1260 have some problems...

first the 1260: (this matters the most)

The problem genneraly is with memory. I've tried with many different sizes, chips, etc. but the problems remains. Long time ago it worked just fine but now it's unusable. Generally the fast memory is not seen by the card. Showconfig doesn't show it. When it finnaly does the setpatch goes ok, but when I put cpu60 the avail command shows that the fast memory is tottaly fragmented (max block 3kb...). When the fast memory is not found, chip gets fragmented... that is the first problem.

When there is no above problem (sometimes - but very ralely it happens) everything works fine.

I used many PSUs (original, 150W & 200W from PCs), now I use 150W and the problem remains. I think there's a circuit broken, I can;t do anything with this without a scheme...

The second 1240 has the same problem (I am not sure if it fragments memory). It makes my amigas unusable with these cards..

There's also a problem with scsi controller. It worked fine with the guy I bought it from amiga but I couldn't make it find attached disk with my cards. I think it may be the same problem as with the memory problems - i did not test it with my only working card because I don't want take the risk ;)

Maybe someone have schematics to these cards????

My Apollo 1240 sometimes doesn't find Fast mem either, but that generally goes away after a hard stare for 2 minutes :)

Try reseating the Mach chips. They tend to become a bit loose here.

I managed to use the scsi module for quite a while (even under OS3.5/3.9) but it takes some doing. Basically, you need to use the supplied floppy to put the drivers on the disk (the device must be on the disk, not just the filesystems). Otherwise it will just crash under anything newer than 3.1. But it shouldn't not find the disk...

I have the same problem with an Apollo 1260. When the memory is on the board, it crashes. When I remove it from there, it works fine.

So I have to use a 060 with 2Mb of Chip... :-(

For me too, it worked well for several years. Then I left it off for a few months. When I tried the board again, I had this problem....

My Apollo 12060/66 MC68060RC50A with 64MB ram, scsi wich i clocked to 80Mhz started to have mem problem after about 5years.

I found that it would only works if mem simms were swaped around it would work even tho they were the same make.

Then  that stoped & i had to mix the makes of simms, that worked for a while.

I bought a Mediator & voodoo3 but found when i used the voodoo3 driver in MMU mode the gfx would corrupt, but everything else that used the MMU worked just fine.

When useing the voodoo3 with vblank interrupt the amiga sortof lockup after a few clickings on progs or draws.
I could not move the mouse pointer or use keyboard, music & movies that was running would still play.

Then the mem went totally only 32megs showing of the 64 that i had pluged in.
Swaped the simms then for some strange reason it showed that i had 128MB's wish is not possible.

Had to see if i could get the 1260 fixed.
I went back to Analogic & they said its nuked.
I said do you have anymore 1260 they said yes one left but it was only a 50Mhz version :-(

I said swap my MC68060RC50A from the old to the new to see if it was just the board that had nuked but not the cpu & lucky for me the cpu was fine :-).

It seems the old board was get worse over time as now all the problems i had with the mediator  the voodoo3 has gone.

The MC68060RC50A is near impossible to get hold of now & i have seen many 060 cards sold as 66 wich dont have the MC68060RC50A id on the chip or show up as Rev 5 in some software that can show the revision number.

If its not MC68060RC50A or shows up as Rev 5 its not a true 66. & you can forget about running at at anything past 66Mhz.

This MC68060RC50A as been running now at 80Mhz for 7-8 years now.

Mine is a 100% rev 5.... it has a big radiator attached to itself but the cpu60 command says it's rev 5... the board originnaly runs at 66Mhz and i didn't overclock it.. though i would if it worked ;)

Its very likely that its just the board that has gone & the cpu is just fine.

You maybe able to  the 060 cpu & power convertor swaped over to the 040 board & junmpers reset.

But the problem is with 1240s.. they do not have a socket but the 040s are surface mounted.. :(

The 060 is in a socket... so here's no problem.

I think there can be some circuit broken ('sometimes ok - sometimes not ok) but I can't do anything with this without schematics - I can't get them from anybody.. :(
