Help with A1200 to pc network
« on: January 09, 2006, 09:04:42 PM »
Hi,

was hoping someone out there can help me here.

I am trying to set up networking on my 1200, but am unable to get my PC (running XP Home) to respond to pings sent from the amiga.  Everything seems to work the other way and I can ping the amiga from the PC.  I can even use Amiga Explorer to view and transfer files between the two machines.  But if I ping the pc from the amiga i get nothing but 100% packet loss.

Any ideas ?

Heres some info on my set up:

Amiga A1200
3Com PCMCIA card
IP 192.168.1.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.101

Win XP Home
IP 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.101

Connection is by crossover cable.

Thanks in advance,

ikorodu

Is the WinXP firewall switched on? If so, then it will block incoming ping traffic.

I have indeed deactivated the windows fire wall.  It seems strange when I ping from the amiga, If I look at the network connection status on the pc it shows that its recieveing data from the amiga (the ping i assume) but the PC never replies.

I also can't understand why Amiga Explorer works faultessly!

This is driving me nuts!

Well if the software works, why does it matter whether or not you can ping the PC?

This looks suspect to me. What is 192.168.1.101 ? If you connect the Amiga directly to the PC with a crossover cable, you usually configure the PC as gateway for the Amiga and vice versa. The gateway is always the computer which is directly connected to this one.

Bye,
Thomas

@ motorollin

I'm trying to set up samba so I can use the PC drives from the amiga.  I just used Amiga Explorer as a test.

@Thomas

I am a complete newbie to networks so my settings could well be wrong.  If I under stand you right then I should set the following:

Amiga A1200
IP 192.168.1.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.1

Win XP Home
IP 192.168.1.1
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.1.2

Is this what you mean?

If so I'll try it tonight when I get home from work.

Thanks for the help

The default gateway setting doesn't make a difference in this case, since both of the machines are on the same network.

The important bit is that the IP addresses are unique (but in the same network) and the subnet masks are the same. These rules have been followed which is why the connection works.

The fact that you can ping in one direction but not in the other suggests to me that the issue is not the network configuration or physical connection, but something blocking the ping traffic to the PC.

Hi,

@ikorodu

Have a look here: http://www.petri.co.il/block_ping_traffic_with_ipsec.htm
(How can I configure a Windows 2000/XP/2003 computer to block Ping packets?)

@ikorodu:

Is your pc also connected to a router?

@noster

Will check my pc config when i get home tonight

@patrik

I'm not using a router just a crossover cable between the two machnines and the PC is connected to the internet via a usb modem

@motorollin

I have had the system working with Amiga Explorer without the gateway ip in place, I added them to try to get the ping thing to work (as I say I know nothing about networking!)  Maybe Nosters idead about pings being blocked is right.  I'll check tonight and post back.

Thanks everyone for your help so far.

A gateway address is only used if you need to access another network - i.e. the Internet, or another local network in large coroprate networks. In your case, with two machines connected to each other with a crossover cable, the default gateway will never need to be addressed by either machine, so even if you put a totally fictitious address as the gateway, communication between the two machines would still work.

If some network applications (e.g. Amiga Explorer) are working but others aren't, then there is a firewall or something blocking the port that that particular application is attempting to communicate on. If the ping packet doesn't make it to the PC, then it is Windows that is doing this.

Do you have any security software on your PC? ZoneAlarm maybe?

Disabled ZoneAlarm and now I can Ping!

I still can not see the amiga from the PC (in network places) even though I think I have samba running ok, but I have Amiga Explorer for this no no real problem.

I would like to see the pc drives from the amiga and am trying to use SMBFS to set this up, however when i try to run smbfs from the shell I get an error saying its not an executable.  Any advice here chaps?

Thanks again for the help guys.

Good news on the network :-)

If you are attempting to run the SMBFS executable and getting an error that it isn't executable, then try typing this in to a shell:

protect smbfs rwed

That should make it executable again.
