AmigaOS 3.9 on my Amiga 1200.
« on: January 09, 2006, 08:30:40 PM »
:-? I can have AmigaOS on Amiga 1200? I guess no. Why? Amiga 1200 is a 680x0 based processor (what is 680x0?) and it could not be powerful to support the great OS. I use an hard drive of 5Gb, but i need also a CD-ROM Drive to insert the AmigaOS CD (And for the CD Drive i can also play CD32 games and music?)... Another, i have listen to PowerPC, but what is it? I have listen to use these computer to use AmigaOS 3.9

If i can't use AmigaOS exists another operating system for the amiga over Workbench?

I wish power up my AMIGA:
- AmigaOS 3.9 (upgrading wit CDROM drive, Blizard 1230IV and 56k modem)

You can have OS3.9 if you have the following specs:

Amiga 4000D Cyberstorm PPC 060@50 604@200 SCSI 130Mb Ram G-Rex Voodoo3 PicassoIV Paloma Ariadne Delfina Lite

Welcome to Amiga.org.  Yes, you can have AmigaOS 3.9 on your A1200, but you do need to buy additional hardware to allow the use of a CD drive, or connect to another computer that has a CD drive to install the files.  A stock A1200 has a 68020 CPU installed but there are accelerators available (used mostly) that use 68030, 68040, 68060 and even a combination of 68040 or 68060 and a PPC 603e CPU's that you can install to speed things up and allow use of some newer software.  Most software available will run on the 68020, but some need faster CPU's and more importantly, more RAM than the stock 2mb of Chip RAM.  There are PCMIA network cards that will allow ethernet connection to another computer or you can use Null modem cable too for transfering files.  Good luck.
How are you helping the Amiga community? :)

...and don't forget that amiga 1200 is coming from 1994 and the amigaos3.9 from the end of 2000. You have to make some hardware upgrade to the 1200 if you wand to follow the evolution. If not you can always use the amigaos 3.1 (or 3.0) disks that came with the 1200 when the world was nice and young...

p.s. the amiga is a commodore or an amiga technologies one? with kickstart 3.0 or 3.1?

Yes you have to buy a card. You can't only change the CPU on the motherboard, it's soldered on there.

The card goes in the trapdoor under your 1200.

Buy a Blizzard 1230 50Mhz. Good card and shouldn't cost too much if you find one.

And i can go on internet with my amiga 1200? But these updates... (hope there's not expensive) and i can use a splitter for insert 2 PCMCIA Cards? (First for CD-ROM, second for ethernet). Another, i can also connect to internet with my Amiga 1200 using a serial port and 56k connection? Third, Amiga can manage USB (for FAT16 Pendrives) with a PCMCIA Converter?

i was using for about 3 years only the 1200 for internet with a serial modem but i have the blizard 1260. the cpu power and plenty of ram help a lot for that...
now, if you have dsl connection try to find a pcmcia ethernet that's the best. for a cdrom read the answer in the other post

AFAIK there are no PCMCIA splitters but you can unplug the card in your Amiga without rebooting.

You only need your cdrom for the installation of OS3.9 not for using it. So for the rest of the time you keep your ethernetcard in.

@Flashlab: the cd is not usefull only to install the os, for example i have an LG CDR-RW 52x32x52 in my 1200 that cost me 25 euro and i use it to load stuff from the amiga magazine's cd's from time to time and to make backup of the sys: and other partitions when there is this kind of need. one of the first things that i made after i fix my recently bought 3000 was to connect an external scsi cdrw for the same reasons.

@amije

Yeah I don't mean you'll never use a cd-rom or cd-rw again but I use my ethernet more than my cd-rom. So that's why I said that you don't really must have a cd-rom to use OS3.9 after the installation.

The a1200 came with a 68020 cpu, so that meets the minimal requirements of OS3.9. The main question is having enough ram and 3.1 kickstart roms.

No,

As stated above:

You have 020 that is enough. But you need more RAM. You can buy any other accellerator as long as it has at least 4Mb RAM. An 060 would be nice but expensive so look for a 030; the Blizzard series are nice.

You do need kickstart 3.1; you can buy that or softkick it. 3.1 roms aren't that expensive though so I suggest buying them.
