I love it how microsoft bash linux and other open source products for being slow with patch releases...

If such a serious threat was known in the linux world, then i bet a patch would have been released ages ago.

Well, how do i use my winxp properly now then, when there is no official patch released for this security hole?
I guess properly must be=not using it at all while waiting for this fix to be released?

can't believe that there are people out - that obviously have knowledge about computers (posting on amiga.org should qualify you for that) - still using windows. after so many years of having tons of alternatives :sealed:

A1200HD, Apollo/060/32MB, 80 GB HD, D-Box Tower, Voodoo3, USB - A600HD 6MB Ram, 40 MB HD - \\\'Windows Free Life\\\'(tm) since 1995

I dont think there are enough alternatives due to lack of software on anything but Windows. I personally use Windows for games and Linux for mostly everything else.

if you want to play, get a playstation... or *drummroll* a classic amiga. i am not into 3d games, tried them, but i think they suck. nothing new since the doom days. just mixed in a bit of this and that genre and a little graphics update. but as long as you disconnect your windows box from net, playing games is one thing. running a webserver is a complete other thing.

i am just wondering, if there is no alternative for windows, how have i managed, as someone working in software industry, to be windows free for more than 7 years (don't even remember exactly). i must be some kind of abnormal human beeing then :lol:

Yeah right...

You obviously haven't experienced Planetside (online 3D futuristic combat game where you can literally have up to 450 people (150 per faction) all fighting in the same area on a continent (and over 7500 in the world map)...

You must have never seen Battlefield 2, or any other "3D" FPS game where it's so realistic that you're literally ducking and leaning in your chair...

You've never got to experience 50 guys (and gals), all on teamspeak (realtime voice chat over the internet) operating together as a cohesive battle unit, each filling a particular role while you wipe the map with the corpses of 75 enemy. Playing games is never the same after you've got to experience getting to know 30-100 different people who you not only play a game online with, but you're also in constant voice comms with the whole time -- when you aren't in the battle you're BSing about real life stuff... good times, really good times. And those 30-100 are just one tiny group of players in a massive online universe of literally thousands of players from all over the world.

Those games are just two examples of the 20-30 new generation first person shooter type games that make *anything* ever to appear previously on any computer platform (or console) look like a bad game of Pong.

Nothing new since DOOM... what an extremely uninformed opinion you have.  :-o

I dont like the console way of gaming. I need both a keyboard and a mouse for my games. The Amiga was indeed great, but sadly there is not much games being developed for it anymore. I still enjoy a few classic games on my a500 though.

Sure, you could hook up a keyboard and a mouse to the ps, but  only 2% of the games support it and i also hate the fact that the playstation and similar consoles are totally closed for non licensed programmers.

You might like the console way of gaming, but i dont. A computer is superiour in most way imo.

And yes, there is a few alternatives but not so much when you are interested in playing games, which is why i run linux for most stuff while i run winxp for games that dont run under linux.

"...i am not into 3d games, tried them, but i think they suck."

What, you've tried -all- of them, and they -all- suck?

"...how have i managed, as someone working in (the) software industry, to be windows free for more than 7 years..."

Going by your attitude toward 3D games it could be because you havent tried anything -new- in 7 years?

...abnormal human beeing?

I still use windows because no other platform has as a good enough  selection of video tools. Tools like Canopus Procoder2 - A high quality batch encoder with a GUI. I would much prefer to use linux so if anybody here knows of anything like Procoder for the linux platform I would love to know about it. The linux community has made great gains in the audio/video area but from what I see they aren't quite there yet.  :-)

And remember: If you installed wmffix_hexblog14.exe earlier, remove it before updating...

(I don't know if the unofficial patch can conflict, but it's better be safe than sorry)

@koaftder

Hopefully, diversification of operating systems might at least mean that one exploit wouldn't automatically affect 90% of systems in existence.  I remember reading an article about top level dns systems that use this approach to ensure that an exploit won't take out the entire dns system.  The downside of course is for companies that write software and support hardware.  Supporting a diverse OS landscape would cost more.  Having one, proprietary, closed operating system completely dominating the computer industry makes it a an easy target.

@catherder

i never played planetside, but i have played other 3d multiplayer war games, i several times took part in a match of savage2 with more then 60 players per party... wasn't impressed too much... still a stupid firstperson/realtime strategy mix. some friends of mine play mmorpg's a lot and i hear them whining about cheaters often. in fact i was a gpl league racer for some time and was confronted with some cheaters. this is why i prefer a 5 player dynablaster with friends over a mmorpg with unknown cheaters a lot. and i still do prefer getting to know new people in real life.

what exactly is the new concept behind battlefield 2?

thats what i am saying... they LOOK better, but they don't PLAY better. the fun in games is a very personal matter, i understand people that are into 3d games. i am not and i think they are not necessary. 3d is now looking as good as handdrawn graphics, but for what price (literally ;) )

@coldfish:

the usual answer from people that have no arguments, personal attack.

no i don't have seen them all, but i have seen a lot and following the gamescene closely. as i started my computer career as a game programmer, i have still friends working in the industry providing me with information. believe me, if you would know me, you would know that you are messing with the wrong guy about having tried nothing new in 7 years, but you don't know me, thats why i prefer personal contact, also in gaming :lol:
