Blizzard 1260 running VERY hot
« on: January 02, 2006, 04:01:30 PM »
I'll estimate it at runing at least 140f / 60c... I can only hold my finger on it for less than a second. I thought the 060 chips were not suppose to run that hot?

Also, it won't run any 3D stuff at all. Never has.

I bought this 1260, along with my A1200 from Software Hut a couple fo years ago, both items were flaky from the start... for the A1200 the keyboard no longer worked, and Software Hut had the nerve to say it was something *I* did to the system, when the fact is I never opened it!

For the Blizzard 1260 "too late!" is basically the reply I get.

I dunno what to do, i'd love to have another 060, or better yet PPC + 060. However the ACK (PowerVixxen LT) will be released around the end of this month / very early Febuary, and Dragon is rumored to be released at the same time. (Don't hold your breath on the Dragon release... it's just a rumor, if it is released then YAY!).

However, the PowerVixxen LT lacks any 68k as far as I know, and also the Dragon's compatability for 68k is unknown.

The reasons for my 68k needs are because of the demo scene. :-D

What is the exact version of the CPU? Including mask set?

Perhaps take a photo of the top of the chip so I can take a look.

Something seriously wrong there dude !!

Does you psu deliver enough grunt ? i used to use a goliath  psu before I towered my A1200.

As a point of note..... i used to render vista pro ANIMS. I once left it rendering 24/7 for TWO WEEKS and the cpu only got warm  ..

This was using a Blizzard A1260 060 (from gordon Harwoods) in a standard case with the trapdoor cover left off.

The trapdoor was left off because RAM was horrifically expensive back then( I paid £150 for 8mb ram secondhand).  I had eagerly bought 8mb double sided ram for my new a1260 card only to discover oninstallation that the A1260 only accepted single sided ram ( YES the documentation DID say that... try RTFM!!) in desperation the guy I bought it off used a ZIP strip to hold it in place... But It stuck out the bottom of the case at a crazy angle... I had to get a section of MDF and cut a trapdoor hole in it and then sit my A1200 on top of it !!

Worked a treat and stayed that way for about another 3 years !!

btw.. That two week long anim render came out CRAP !!

Sorry for wandering off the beaten track with that comment but it reminded me of how expensive things were and how there's alway a solution !!

And its a laugh to read as well !!

I returned my Blizzard 1260 two times. The first time the disable key number '2' doesn't work and the second crashed every time when I want to try to use it.

The third B1260 works very well. I use the Blizard 1260 with SCSI kit and fitted a 2.5" HD of 1 GB, 128 MB of RAM And ScanDoFF Flickerfixer. All of these runnig on a A500 PSU with 4.5A. It's about 35 Watts.

It runs hot, but I haven't have problems.

I use a mainboard revision 1D4.

What sort of hardware do you fitted with your Amiga? A combination of all kinds of hardware sometimes can make your Amiga flakey.

read here for more info:

Also try the 060 libs from Aminet.

My Blizzard 1260 ran extrmemely hot aswell. I could not keep my finger on the CPU for long before it really started to hurt. Haven't really bothered about checking how hot it runs nowadays (and that why I say "ran"), but I've had no problems with it whatsoever and it is rather well used.

Hmm, I have a DCE blizzard 060 and it too always got really hot. Not so much so I couldn't touch it but hot enough to make me decide to slap a heatsink on it.

Not sure whether it's was an XC or an MC because those characers had conveniently been rubbed off the cpu!

Mine says *060RC50 in the top centre where * means something rubbed off. Then 01F43G QEEE9546A MALAYSIA in the top right.

Then it says 68060 in big numbers with 2002 in smaller numbers wack bang in the centre.

I mention all this because my setup too has always performed really {bleep} with 3D apps, I always thought it was my mediator setup?

You can never ever have too much cooling on any IC... Especially CPUs. Slap heatsinks and fans on those puppies! Other chips getting hot? Heatsink em!

Create defined paths of airflow... Intake fan... Tape over misc holes you don't want air passing through... Exhaust fan. That way air passes where you want it to... Over the heatsinks!

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

 - Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. :D -

Gotta agree -- put some heatsinks on there (dont forget to use thermal paste )

Yes I remember the 1260 running very hot in my A1200 desktop, so I sold it.  My 040/33 actually seems to run cooler!  Dont know why.

There's no Motorola insignia or anything on the CPU, just what you see in the picture, it says, "XC68060RC50" and on the bottom of that "9942".

That's ALL that on the CPU too. Absolutely nothing else.

Very interesting. The CPU with "XC68060RC50 9942" is a very early sample prototype. Might be worth a few bucks if there is a CPU collecting scene.

It might also explain why this chip runs hot. 1st generation chips very rarely run cool at their predicted operating speed.

That mask F43G is an XC mask, making it older. Impossible to tell if it's an EC / LC version (i.e. no FPU) by looking, but if it's rubbish at 3D apps, get the program SCOUT or a similar program to tell you if you have an FPU.

QEEE9546A means it was made in the 46th week of 1995. I have no idea why your chip says 2002 elsewhere.

Scout states that it has a functioning FPU.

So I guess the reason mine runs hot is because its an old version? If so I wonder why it has 2002 written on it, coincidence?
