2.5" IDE
« on: April 08, 2003, 12:18:47 AM »
Sorry for this for being another post asking a seemingly trivial question! But.....
One of my friends has an old P120 laptop that's bust and he's chucking out. I've taken a look at it, the battery is dead (well an overnight charge lasts 2 minutes (literally!)), the dual scan screen is past its best, but it has a 1gig HD in there. So...This can be fitted into an A600/A1200? A 2.5" IDE HD is a 2.5" IDE HD, right?

Thanks  :python:
I like Amigas

Correct...  My A1200 is running a 2.5" toshiba drive.. out of... err, an old Toshiba work was scrapping.

Try to find a real C= mounting kit for it, though.  Otherwise, you'll have to improvise a bracket (easy) and find or make the smaller laptop-size IDE cable (hard)

the cable to connect the drive I suspect is easier to find than the more powerful PSU you'll also want (with likely an accel, too).   National Amiga in london, ontario made me one for a good price a few years ago but you have to send them your original PSU for the connector.  Try contacting them about making you one, assuming they still do Amiga stuff. .

Yeah, the A1200 power supply is a little feeble.  I just took one of the older, heavier A500 power supplies (from a dead 500), though.   (Even better to take would be a 3rd party heavy duty A500 power supply.) They should be fairly easy to find.  I remember calling no less than 10 parts dealers around here, though, looking for that laptop IDE cable...

BTW:  Is National Amiga still around?  They were good guys...

I had the funniest of problems when I tried putting a 2.5" HD from a PC into a 600 I was repairing... Ran prep tool that followed with A600HD and that worked well... though when I resetted the A600 the HD was gone. Went into HDToolbox and it saw the HD, closed it down again and the HD's would pop up.

Seem also small 2.5" can take ages to report back for duty, way past what the A600 accept, but a quick cut of pin1 fixed that... now I just have to do a reset at coldboot. :-D
