68k or PPC or UAE?
« on: December 29, 2005, 12:17:02 AM »
What do most people here use? Are PPC units more popular than 68k? Or are most here emulating an Amiga?

I use WinUAE with my old 2 and 3.1 ROMs. I also own a 600.

Personally, I've never even seen a real PPC-based Amiga. By the time the PPC-based accelerators were appearing in numbers, I'd moved from the Amiga to the PC as my main productivity platform, keeping the Amiga stuff for hobby and nostalgia use. Plus I couldn't justify the cost!

I mainly use an A3000D and A1200, both on 3.1 - though the A3000 will be upgraded to 3.9 in the next month or so. I also own an A500, A600 and A1000 but these are buried in a cupboard.

I use UAE for when I can't be bothered with floppies and for testing things out.

Most of us have some form of 68k based system(s), as well as a fully decked out copy of *UAE running. A few of us have AmigaOne/Pegasos boards to play with... And of course a few more with Dual CPU accellerators (Cyberstorm/Blizzard).

I really don't see any excuse for anyone here JUST using *UAE... A500's are plentiful, cheap, and fun. BUT, that's just me  :-D

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

 - Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. :D -

@nagaflas

68K = yes, Amiga 2000HD running Amiga OS3.1
PPC = yes, µA1-C running Amiga OS 4.0 pre-release.
UAE = yes, E-UAE running on my µA1 to experiment with my old 68K programs.

I use a 4000D with a PPC card and OS 3.9. Emulation isn't the same.

68k for me here.
My A600 has the 68k 000(hopefully 020 soon)
My A1200 has the 68k 020
Another A1200 has the 68k 030
Another A1200 has the 68k 060

These sort of questions are best answered using a poll of some sort.

Erno

Genuine 68k only here. No PPC, no UAE, just pure, classic Motorola :-)

I have an A500+ with the original 68000 processor.

I do use WinUAE sometimes though.

Moved from a 040/1200 to Amithlon & Amiga Forever, created a hardfile from the A1200 harddrive before the machine was sold, so lost no files. Now got the benefit of a nice screenmode for workbench and a much faster AOS on cheaper easy to update hardware.

The other alternatives are just way too expensive and offer nothing to me.

When I do use an Amiga it's mostly my A4000/040. I do have a UAE setup that I use for testing occasionally.

@Doppie1200:

Sorry, this is off topic, but where are your getting the 020 accel for your Amiga 600 from? I've been trawling eBay and a few other places but haven't seen any A600 accelerators for a while :(. I'd be happy with an 020 as long as there's some Fast RAM :).

Thanks,
John

I use:
Amiga 4000 '040
Amiga 4000 '060 / PPC
AmigaForever 2005
AmigaOne XE-G4

I am moving more towards PPC for the long run.
I will be buying more AmigaOnes and they will become my main machines.
I will always keep an A4000. (and an A1000 in the closet)
I hope AmigaForever or someone creates an OS4/PPC emulator, not because it will be better than a real Amiga, but for portability on Laptops, infiltrating office workstations :), and also if my Amiga hardware breaks. :(

I got rid of most of my Amigas and kept just one:

A4000D/030 @25MHz
Cyberstorm MkI 040/40 with 128MB RAM
Blizzard PPC 040/33 w/603/200 with 192MB RAM (in the mail)
15GB WD IDE HDD
52X Lite-On CD ROM Drive
Mediator 4000Di
 PCI   Realtek 8139 10/100
 PCI   Voodoo3 2000 (still not working.. grrr)
 Zorro GVP HD+8 SCSI Controller (for my Zip Drive)
Dell 2000FP 20" Flat Panel LCD Monitor (works with native Amiga modes)

Emulation just isn't the same. Might be willing to sell the MkI after I am sure that I am happy with the BPPC.
