Which is faster -
A 50Mhz 68030
Or
A 25Mhz 68040

IMHO the 040/25MHz is about 2 times faster.  ~18 MIPS.

Considering dhrystones, 040@25 Mhz is about 4 times faster than 030@50Mhz.

In real usage condition, 040 is far better.

PS: tested with Blizzard 1230-IV, Apollo 630, MTEC 1230, Apollo 1240 and Blizzard 040PPC.

4 times faster!? Perhaps in benchmarks, but in real life it feels marginal faster than the 68030/50. Only the FPU seems to be a lot faster. I have used both systems, so i'm talking from my expirience.
One other issue is that the 68040 is much more cache sensitive. If you need to disable the caches for compatibility reasons, it becomes a LOT slower than the 68030 with its caches disabled.

When i replaced for the first time my Blizzard 1230-IV@50Mhz for an Apollo 1240@28Mhz, it was more than a major boost.
040 is clearly faster than 030 for me. 030 is no good enough for a RTG system, 040 is nice.

Well redwarffer, accelerator board are expensive on amiga.
Are you looking to expand an A1200? Blizzard 1230 should be the easiest and cheapest to find.

Another thing to consider is the compatibility. Though the 040´s are faster you often need special 040-versions of several programs because otherwise they may crash. You don´t have that problem with an 68030 board ...
Where to buy ? Check out Ebay, Vesalia, AmigaKit, and Amibench ...

Heat can also be a consideration with 68030s vs 68040s... 68030s run much cooler and won't suffer from potential overheating issues if used in a desktop A1200.

Yes yes, 040/25 is a good deal faster than a 030/50... Don't be fooled by clock speed. It's the internals of the CPU, not the clock speed, that determine how fast it can handle data.

And yes, remember to properly cool an 040... A standard socket 7 style heatsink/fan fits nicely.

Mac Mini 1.5GHz, that might run MorphOS someday, when the fools who own it come to the realization that 30 minutes just isn\'t enough time to play with it enough to decide whether or not you like it enough to cough up $200.

 - Someone please design SOME kind of DIY accelerator for the A4000. :D -

So... nobody can really agree eh?

Wasn't there a dissassembler (originally geared for 680X0 > PPC conversion) and assembler kit that let you reassemble executables for different processors?  Sort of a semi-smart cross-assembler in that it could re-target disassembled executables to a different 680x0 processor.

I would consider the 68040 if I could get my hands on that mythical 040 patch for arp.library

Makes me wonder how that ColdFire card  will handle 68030 and 68040 instructions. The company has curiously mute on the topic.

030 VS 040

040 / 25 =
Faster ~20-23mips, built in FPU doing several MFLOPPS
Hotter Big heatsink is mandatory and benefit from a fan aswell
Poor Compatibility Runs into trouble over and over again if it's not written specificly with that CPU in mind
Upgrade Some boards support the uppgrade to a 060 CPU

030 / 50 =
Slower ~9-10mips, extra FPU chip needed for a single MFLOPPS
Cooler Benefits from heatsink but not mandatory
Good Compatibility Runs most anything even if it's not written specificly with that CPU in mind
Upgrade Simply not possible
