Join several amiga boards into one!
« on: December 28, 2005, 11:47:30 AM »
Hello!

There is several very good amiga boards inclusive amigaworld.net. So far I have found these

http://amigaworld.net
http://www.amiga.org
http://eab.abime.net            English amiga board

wouldn't it be great to join efforts of these three boards into one. Then there would be more users that can share information and thoughts and projects and so on.

Just a thought...

Each forum has it's own feel to it, it's own spirit and community.  It wouldn't be right to tamper with that.

Choice and diversity is good.

EDIT
----

I should also edit, that many people are members of several of those boards, so you're not really missing out on expertise.

@uncharted: agreed - I'm a member of more than one Amiga board, but choose to spend my time on A.org far more than anywhere else as it's a friendly place and is more aimed at the classic side of things that I'm interested in...

Well, I do see your point, though there are several other issues that has to be considered. For starters:

* If many boards are joined into one, not only does the boards join but entire communities are joined into one, and there will probably be many voices raised against it (aswell as raised for).

* The bigger the board the more to maintain.

* If one big board goes down, so much is lost, if one of many goes down, there are still several others left.

* All the boards have different ways of dealing with things, they also have different approaches, discussionwise, rulewise, membershipwise, manyotherthingswise... the English Amiga Boards, for example, are nothing like these boards, and I do not think the members of that boards would be willing to have an Amiga.org like major board, just as little as the members of Amiga.org would like to see these boards transform into something like the English Amiga Boards. Finding a solution to that would be hard and I think that having a variety of boards to chose from is all but bad.

It would be a nice thing, I do admit that, but I think that it in the end would be a very troublesome affair. Probably more troublesome than pleasant.

There are a lot more than three - there are dozens if not hundreds of Amiga-related forums out there.  Why on Earth would you want to merge them?

The three boards you mentioned are all very different from eachother - amigaworld.net is mainly the os4/a1 people and is generally intolerant of anyone without the same view, eab is mainly emulation / classic / retro gaming related - very little discussion of new PPC systems, and amiga.org is everything Amiga whether it's OS3.x, MorphOS, OS4.0, Aros, or even Linux.  They're for different people.

Jörgen,

I have no intent to troll, or to stir up crap with this response.

The problem here is one of egos and rumormongering.  Amigaworld.net was started because they wanted a "pure" place to discuss the Amiga One and to worship Amiga Inc and it's employees.  They vehemently disagreed with my "open" policy of supporting everything that was aimed at the Amiga community, not just Amiga Inc.

My policy was embraced at a time when it truly seemed (to me) that Amiga Inc were all but dead, and there were other brightly shining alternatives available.  (Boy was I wrong on that one...)

I understand their stance, and I don't hold it against them at all, but I disagreed with it at the time, hence AW.net was born.  Hell, Amiga.org itself was born because I saw needs that the now defunct Amiga Web Directory didn't fulfill, so who am I to complain?

Even before Genesi entered the limelight (arguably to divide the Amiga community and as Bill Buck's personal revenge on Bill McEwen*), I was personally being berated and debased by the "inner circle" Amiga Inc crowd because of my (now proven correct) stance against the decision to only support the PPC, so I'm not sure that even had Genesi not come around that AmigaWorld.net wouldn't have happened sooner or later.

Now, after several years and lots of bad blood under the bridge because of the open policies of Amiga.org, there is a natural "passive aggressive" animosity towards Amiga.org by some, (certainly not all) of the AW.net staff.  This has been accentuated by the relative slow and painful death of Amiga Inc and the failure to finalize AmigaOS4 by Hyperion over the past 5 (near 6) years.

Of course, I personally have made lots of mistakes along the way that I truly wish I could take back, and I've done my own damage to the online Amiga community that I never intended to do, and that I truly wish had never, ever happened.

In the end, my life has gotten complicated, outside of Amiga.org, and I cannot help (from my current perspective) but to look back and laugh at the childish stupidity displayed by lots of the people involved over the years (myself included) in thinking that the Amiga was universally important in the grand scheme of things, rather than the enjoyable hobby that it is.

Based on that knowledge I have, in fact, over the last few years made several peace offerings and cooperation proposals to a few members of the AW.net staff, only to be met with mockery and even derision, so in the end, I've made the conscious decision to stop trying and let nature run it's course.

I sincerely wish that we could "all just get along", but I'm not sure that'll ever happen.  Amigaworld.net has their purpose, and their visitors.  Amiga.org has our own purpose, and our own visitors (most of whom thankfully overlap with both sites).  There's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

In the end, the Amiga is just a hobby now, as it should be.  Not really sure that it was ever anything more, despite my own desires to make it such.  The people involved in supporting the Amiga community (certainly not Amiga Inc) are happy with their efforts, and it's natural to resist change.

Besides, combining efforts would only lead to a situation where friction was created between the people involved over how things should be done or certain events handled, and we certainly don't need any more controversy in the Amiga community...  :)

AO is the best.  I tend to steer clear of the coffee house though, because of the Canadian al-Queda.

EAB is great though.  Lots of good gaming discussion with no politics at all.
Time to move on.  Bye Amiga.org.  :(

well, i have tried several amiga forums before.

amiga.org. i come here as i thing here are the people that are thinking the way i am. i think the several amiga forums has theire reason in pleasing several types of amiga users.

on amiga.org i expect to talk to people that are using a REAL amiga. no amiga one, no emulotor, just a plain 680x0 based amiga. thats what i am interrested in, thats what i expect to find if i visit amiga.org.

i don't think all amiga forums should be joined, as there are too much different groups using amiga - be it native, emulated or modern (ppc) amigas - out there

thanx amiga community ;-)

I think it is great that news topics are shared among the boards. Furthermore I hope there will always be enough users for multiple boards. Indeed they all have a unique feel.

This board is the most diverse I beleive. Here the people who practice the amiga hobby in a different way seem to coexist (is this sentence correct english? hope you get my drift) while on other boards (aw) flame wars are more common.

Not too long ago someone fled aw.

Anyway thumbs up for the staff and keep it running!

Erno

Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations represents a Vulcan belief that beauty, growth, progress--all result from the union of the unlike. Concord, as much as discord, requires the presence of at least two different notes. The brotherhood of man is an ideal based on learning to delight in our essential differences, as well as learning to recognize our similarities. The IDIC symbol is a union of a plain circle and triangle, uniting to produce the beautiful gemstone in the middle. The circle represents infinite, nature, woman, etc; the triangle can represent the finite, art, man, etc.
